Pressure generally wasn't necessary unless it involved one of those three, so Odin applied pressure from multiple sides. Sif's mother, who already wanted her daughter to marry into a good house, and then Thor himself, who wanted nothing more but to marry Jane.
Neither side, though, got what they wanted in the end.
