Jackson was, as often at this hour (unless he had plans with Corbie), at the bar, and well on his way to completely sozzled. He would have sworn up and down that he could still walk in a straight line, if asked, but the truth was that that line would have to be a little squiggly in places. But his Virginia drawl was more pronounced than usual, and he was at that energetic, talking-too-much stage where everybody nearby might be treated as a friend, no matter what his relation to them were, if they even had one.

"We don't talk about it often enough," he told the next such person his eyes landed on, without so much as a hello, "but the clitoris is, by far, the best organ in the entire human body. 'd ya know it's the only organ, the only one, that serves no purpose but pleasure? That's just..." His hands moved in the air as he looked for the right word, narrowly avoiding splashing bourbon with the one still holding a glass. "That's amazin'. Twice as many nerve endings as in a penis, too. Just picture that amount of pleasure. Men got played."

Perfectly respectable conversation to have with anyone, after ingesting as much bourbon as he had. Perfectly. Respectable.

"Also that," Jackson confirmed with a nod. Which didn't mean he wasn't thoroughly into giving his partners multiple orgasms. Which was why, when he repeated, "Played," he sounded everything but aggravated.

"It's almost like nature gave them something to kind of make up for all the shit it and people put them through." And they did get put through all sorts of shit.

"Either that, or evolution. If sex feels better, you probably have more of it, meaning more chances of getting pregnant. More pregnancies, more kids to pass on those extra nerve endings to, on and on through generations. Survival of the fittest, the fun times edition."

"I like that one," Jackson confirmed, pointing at Coby approvingly. "Guess nature figured men didn't need an extra incentive. Can't blame her, really."

Huh. Coby's glass was empty. How had that happened? He caught the bartender's eye to ask for a refill, and actually waited until she'd gotten it for him and then moved further down the bar before he continued a conversation she probably didn't want to hear as much of as she was.

"If that's the way we're thinking, it probably explains refractory periods too. Nature telling people to slow down, focus on somebody else for awhile."

"So we fucked ourselves over, that's what you're sayin'?" Jackson asked, and chuckled. "Yeah, I can see that."

"At least it's better than fucking over other people." Coby shook his head, amused. "On the other hand, it could just be to keep us all from dying out from dehydration." A thought which deserved another healthy swallow of whiskey.

"Then why do we love alcohol so much, huh?" Jackson had to ask, raising his glass of bourbon before taking another sip.

"What's that quote?" Not that Coby expected Jackson to know what he was talking about, more just thinking out loud, or filling the space while he thought. "Alcohol is proof god loves us and wants us to be happy? Something like that anyway."

"Hey, I'll drink to that," Jackson stated with a smile, and took a healthier drink, polishing that glass and asking the bartender for a new one. "Thanks, darlin'," he told her appreciatively once it was poured.

He didn't think God particularly loved them, but hey. Drinking to alcohol being a blessing was never a bad idea.

Coby raised his glass to the idea, and took another drink.

"Besides, the more you drink, the better it gets. Of course we're going to like it." That ignored the morning after, but the more you drank, the easier it was to do that too. And the more you were going to wish you hadn't, when that morning actually came around.

"Some people mind the hangovers," Jackson remarked. And the loss of control. Jackson welcomed the sweet oblivion, and could live with the hangovers.

"Well, they aren't exactly my favorite part either, but what are you going to do... not drink?" Coby huffed and shook his head. Like that was going to happen.

"Their loss," Jackson concurred. "I don't rightly know how anyone can stand it here without drinkin'."

It's all good, along with alcohol, pot, music, and sex, made it mostly bearable for Coby, although even he got bored out of his scrabbled egg mind. And that didn't touch the hole left by Anael, or of being so close to home and too far away at the same time. But he wasn't most people. He thought of Jag, barely holding together. Of Sunny, who seemed so alone, even with friends. Of... well, of almost everybody, if he thought about it.

"I don't know how anyone can stand it here. Fixed that for you."

That, of course, made Jackson level a surprisingly steady, observing gaze on Coby, given the amount of alcohol he'd ingested so far. Coby didn't look like a man close to the edge, but who knew. Some people hid that sort of thing well. "How're you doin', Coby?"

Coby shrugged, but he wasn't waving off the concern. "Me? It's all good. Same as usual. But I see how this place gets to people. Some more than others." It was that 'some' he was worried about.

"Are you worried about anybody in particular?" Jackson asked, after taking another sip of bourbon.

Opening his mouth to answer, Coby hesitated, shook his head, and took another drink.

"I haven't drunk nearly enough to be such a downer. Booze good, fire pretty is a much better idea." No, that wasn't the quote, but Jackson wouldn't recognize it anyway, and it was true.

Jackson didn't even know what that was a reference too, but it certainly gave him an idea who Coby might have meant. He wasn't going to pick up on that out loud, though. He'd just keep an eye on the kid.

"Then let's get more booze," Jackson concluded with a smirk, and turned to catch the bartender's eye.
