Constance still tried, when she met someone, instead of assuming they wouldn't understand her. A few spoke French of one sort or another, which was a relief, and she wouldn't know if she didn't try. But she'd mostly prepared for those she met not to. She pointed to the dough, then to the other woman and herself, and tugged the ends of her sleeves up slightly although they ended halfway up her forearm anyway, so needed no rolling or tugging up to be out of the way.
