"They wanted to make an example out of her father for being a traitor." He paused. "And they wanted to make sure I could still do my job, after everything."

And he technically failed. Sure, he placed the explosives, but they had a back up denotation button and when he couldn't do it....

"I tried to warn her, but she was upset that I lied. She wouldn't go with me."

Somehow the words were coming out and he couldn't seem to stop them.
