Check-In: Not-Mother Hen

Kitty sat at the bar with a cup of coffee and her notebook, watching the 'welcoming committee' make themselves busy. Liz was here, as she'd promised Kitty she would be and Kitty gave her a quick smile of encouragement.

One of the worst things about Check-In Days was that you never knew whether it'd be a whole long day of no one arriving, one spectacular fall from the ceiling and dropping dead after another, or anything in between. It made it hard to know what to do with yourself. After awhile, you got used to it and just kept on with whatever you'd do otherwise, and know that if you didn't step up for a new arrival, someone else would. But for someone not used to treating it like a responsibility to be here, especially someone with Liz's anxious need to be perfect at it, Check-In Day could be emotionally exhausting.

So Kitty made sure to have milk warmed for hot cocoa and her plans for the obstacle course handy in case Liz needed something to do with herself. Otherwise, she was working on a modification of Cerebro to see if she could start detecting new arrivals.

"So you do this often?"

Thor gestures to cream-filled glass that once held the shot glance he picked up with only his mouth. He remains oblivious to the double entendre.

"Show me. I'd like to watch. To learn your technique."

"Among other things?" Thor repeats. He makes no attempt to make his curiosity; he's always worn his heart on his sleeve.

He started to make a second one. "Remind me to teach you about Earth slangs and double meanings."

Once the drink was made again, Alec put his arms around his back. He leaned forward. His lack of need to breathe meant that he could stay down a lot longer than most. He didn't go straight for the shot. Instead, in long, fluid motions he licked away the whipped cream before leaned more in and retrieving the shot. He threw his head back and downed the alcohol, then took the shot glass out of his mouth, grinning proudly. He only had a little bit of cream on his chin and nose.

Thor claps, clearly impressed. "Leave no ground untouched."

Still, Thor wonders if there was some reason for Alec's strangely sexual display. Thor briefly wonders if there was some reason for it, concludes that Alec may be sexually into him, and decides he would be okay with that.

"Well, I did have parents." Mostly. Even if her relationship with them was as complicated as everything else in her life. They were still her mother and father. And then there was the TARDIS.

"And I was fostered at a very young age." Wouldn't Madame Kovarian appreciate it being described thus.

Thor takes another swig of his beverage. "Sounds complicated," he says. Thor knows complicated. Everything about his family situation was complicated. "What makes you a daughter of time?"

He'd thought it was a title. Now he wasn't so sure.

"Have to have a party trick to get people's attention, right?" He wiped away whatever was left on his face.

"Well, you've got mine."

"Uh... what?" Alec blinked and looked confused. He didn't think he was that drunk, but had Thor suggested what he just suggested?

Thor blinks right back.

"Wait, are you -- are you heterosexual?" He points at the glass, perplexed. "That whole thing with the tongue. Weren't you coming onto me?"

"Hot we can do." She gestured for him to follow her back into the cafe. "It's probably going to be weird for awhile. I wish I could say it won't, but even for people who are used to weird stuff happening, this is hard to get your head around."

While Alec was fairly confident he would be fantastic at giving head to another guy, the thought of actually doing that was very unappealing.

"... No, definitely not coming onto you." Maybe he had drank too much? "It's called a muff-diver, Thor. As in, you know, a woman's -" He made a vague circle gesture to his crotch area.

"Ohhhh," Thor says, suddenly enlightened by the explanation of Midgar slang.

"Many genders have muffs, though," he says. "Not just women. I have seen them with my own eyes."

"Are we talking aliens?" Because Alec was kind of getting lost here a bit. "And... you've seen a lot of them?"

"Most of them, yes," he says. "I've slept with a few Asgardians. Just one human, though."

Jane.

"USusally when I try to expain there are graphs and visual aids," complicated was an understatement. "The occasional flowchart can be handy."

She refilled her glass and leaned against the bar toward him conspiratorially.

"The time vortex is and interdimensional plane where time and space meet. Once you've traveled through it you're inextricably linked to it, and I was conceived within it."

He could respect that. In fact, he pursed his lips together and gave a slight nod as if to say 'alright then.' "I can respect that. And you'll have plenty of humans and other things to choose from here if you want." Alec had slept with a gnome on several occasions - something he thought he'd never do.

"Just, you know, not with me. Sorry. Way more into women."

She shook her head. "No accent." Not that she did too and a lot of people thought she should coming from the South. "He definitely came from somewhere that's really cold." That much had been obvious. "And I don't think it was exactly safe, wherever he was."

Thor follows her cue, leaning over the bar to close the space between them.

"That's something," Thor says, without judgment. "What happens when you're linked to this place? Do you have the powers of time and space now?"

"I can respect your dedication to a single gender," Thor says. He gestures to the cup again. "I'm sure you're a skilled lover."

"I did," she said with an airy sigh. "All used up I'm afraid. And all that's left is a touch of wanderlust, and a really remarkable arse."

Don't judge, she'd focused hard during that last regeneration to get a bum quite so shapely as hers turned out.

Somehow that praise from someone like Thor - who Alec was learning quickly seemed pretty straight-forward and honest about most things - was validating. He'd never admit it, but it made him inwardly beam.

"I try to be, anyways." That was supposed to be him sounding humble, but his tone of voice held more confidence than it should for that statement. "I don't think you'll particularly have a problem here, if that's you're thing. Plus occasionally there are otherworlds and those are interesting."

"I'd be happy to confirm it if you wanted to join me on this side of the bar."

Thor grins at the compliment. "If only being a skilled lover was enough to keep someone at your side," he says somewhat wistfully.

The wistfulness is short-lived, though, as he takes another swig of his beverage. Thor is starting to lose count of how many bottles he's had, but clearly, it's still not enough.

"The attractive redhead mentioned those other worlds," he says. "What do you do there?"

"I don't need confirmation," she said with a laugh as she picked up her pitcher of Sangria and moved around the bar making sure he'd get a good look before joining him on one of the adjacent stools.
