Check-In: Not-Mother Hen

Kitty sat at the bar with a cup of coffee and her notebook, watching the 'welcoming committee' make themselves busy. Liz was here, as she'd promised Kitty she would be and Kitty gave her a quick smile of encouragement.

One of the worst things about Check-In Days was that you never knew whether it'd be a whole long day of no one arriving, one spectacular fall from the ceiling and dropping dead after another, or anything in between. It made it hard to know what to do with yourself. After awhile, you got used to it and just kept on with whatever you'd do otherwise, and know that if you didn't step up for a new arrival, someone else would. But for someone not used to treating it like a responsibility to be here, especially someone with Liz's anxious need to be perfect at it, Check-In Day could be emotionally exhausting.

So Kitty made sure to have milk warmed for hot cocoa and her plans for the obstacle course handy in case Liz needed something to do with herself. Otherwise, she was working on a modification of Cerebro to see if she could start detecting new arrivals.

Bradley stopped when he heard the voice and turned to see him. This guy actually looks normal

He looked at his phone. Then he pocketed it.

"What should I do, then?" He asked.

"I don't know," he says. "What do you like to do, man? We got like, a pool and library and stuff."

They weren't exactly swimming in fun things to do, but if there was anything Hurley knew from experience, you had to make your own fun.

"That probably doesn't seem like stuff you should do when you've just been separated from everybody, but there isn't much you can do about it. You might as well try to have a good time."
st_randedinwinter: (Huh)

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
The feeling built up inside of him like a bubbling pot of water. His lips formed a thin line and his body tense.

"A good time?" He said, looking like he might tear up soon. "You don't know anything about me."

His hands balled into fists and his weight shifted. His eyes started to well up, but he was obviously fighting it.

"Whoa, sorry, dude," Hurley says, because what do you say when a kid's about to start crying in front of you? Walt was basically the only kid on the plane and that kid was always hanging out with Locke and stuff. Until all that stuff with the Others happened. That was weird.

"You wanna play Connect Four?" he asks. Probably a weird thing to ask, but Hurley found that playing something repetitive helped with his anxiety. It was probably why he played it as much as he did when he was in the hospital.

I can't have a good time when Caleb...

He inhaled deeply and wiped his face with his sleeve. Brad looked like he felt bad as he glanced over to the side of the hallway. He nodded, but didn't answer in words.

"Sorry things suck so much," Hurley says, opening the door to his room. "Gimme a second and I'll grab the game."

True to his word, Hurley re-emerges about 30 seconds later with a Connect Four box that look like it came straight out of the 70s or 80s.

"I think the only reason I didn't completely lose it when I first showed up here was because I was already trapped on an island where I came from. You wanna play in the lobby?"

"You were trapped on an island?" He asked, focusing on that. "Uh, yeah... I guess so."

Bradley eyed the box. It looked old. He was pretty sure his and Caleb's version of the game when they were looked looked completely different.

"Yeah," Hurley says, leading the way. "Our plane crashed and a bunch of freaky stuff happened after that. Like, there's these stations or something that were left behind by something called the Dharma Initiative. Like, there was one station where you had to enter some numbers into a computer every 108 minutes."

Hurley gives a little shrug as he leads the way down the stairs. "It ended up exploding."

Bradley stared for a long minute.

"...wow." He finally said as he followed. "That sounds really... weird."

Now I get why this guy seems so okay with this place

"Things don't explode here, do they?" He asked quietly.

"They haven't yet," Hurley says. "Stuff's been pretty safe here. And, you know, there's food."

That had been a problem for awhile on the island.

Hurley settles down in a chair in the lobby and sets the box down on the table.

"It sucks because all my friends are back on that island. Yeah, we were trying to get off it, but they might still be there dealing with stuff like the Smoke Monster and the Others and stuff."

A deep frown emerged on Bradley's features. It expressed worry and fear. He felt it suddenly become harder to breathe.

"Do you really think the people we left behind are still dealing with things without us?" He asked quietly.

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_illkindalost 2018-06-18 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurley opens the box and looks up as Bradley starts to speak. It's clear the kid's scared. Hurley gets that.

"There's some people here who know each other back home, but are from completely different times," he says. "None of them seem to remember their friends going missing. If you ask me, I totally buy into the life on pause theory. A lot nicer than worrying that your friends are freaking out back home."

They'd probably think he was taken by the Smoke Monster or something.

Hurley starts pulling out piece and puts the "board" together, then pushes the box, filled with colored tokens.

"Red or black? I'll let you go first."

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)

"uh, Red." He replied.

Brad let his brain take in what Hurley said. It was really important to him that Caleb wasn't alone.

He dropped the first red disc into the middle slot.

"I was in a truck with my younger brother when I got here," he said quietly. "He's 12."

st_illkindalost: (Uncomfortable.)

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_illkindalost 2018-06-20 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah?" Hurley asks, dropping in his own disc on top of Brad's. "You weren't driving, were you?"

He doesn't look old enough to drive with a license. Permit, maybe? Hurley wasn't sure. He was pretty bad at figuring out ages. He thought Walt was like, 7, and he was 10 and pretty good at spelling, too.

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-20 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)

"Yeah, I was." He said. My dad talk me two days ago before.... "We needed to get away from where we are. If a cop pulls me over, I'd be okay with that."

We just wanted to go back home and see mom

He put a red beside his other one.

st_illkindalost: (Worried.)

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_illkindalost 2018-06-20 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurley deposits a token directly on the other side of Brad's first. He's surprised to hear that the kid was driving around, but considering that he and Johnny once stole a golf cart and drove it around the course when they were about Brad's age, it's not entirely unbelievable.

"Where were you?"

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-22 03:49 am (UTC)(link)

Brad takes a moment to answer and uses looking at the placement of their tokens as an excuse.

"North of Sudbury, Ontario." He answered. "In Canada. It's like, the middle of winter there, not like it is here, and we got stranded in the woods a few days ago."

The next red token is placed beside his others. It creates three in a row.

Hurley slips his piece right on the other side of his 3. He's got him blocked in for now.

"What, the snow strand you or something?" he asks.

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-22 11:12 am (UTC)(link)

He looked at the tokens for his next strategic placement.

"My, uh..." He said, visibly pausing with a deep inhale. Brad's shoulders rose and fell and his next two words came out careful like walking on ice "... My dad. He was letting me drive back home because he had been drinking. He was teaching me. But my brother Caleb was being a jerk and we started fighting and we hit a tree. Our car was stuck in the snow."

Bradley held the token between his thumb and middle finger and spun in slowly with his index.

"I came here in a different truck a few days after that." He added, then placed the red token over the black on in the middle.

Hurley frowns at Bradley's artful placement of his token.

"That sucks, dude," Hurley pronounces, surveying the board thoughtfully. "I kinda crashed a car before I came here, too. It's not fun."

Hurley finally places his token.

"Are you and your brother pretty close?" he asks.

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-22 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)

"Yeah" He said. "I mean, most of the time. He can be really annoying, but he's 12."

Brad shrugged. He thought Caleb was annoying a lot, but the distance had him realizing he missed his brother.

"I'm supposed to take care of him." Brad added. "I'm the oldest."

As an after thought, brad dropped a token in, trying to connect his pieces.

st_illkindalost: (Content.)

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_illkindalost 2018-06-22 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurley pops in another token.

"I don't have any siblings, but my family's Catholic so I have about a million cousins. We were always fighting all the time. Doesn't mean we didn't take care of one another when it counted."

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)

"I just... I never told him, you know?" He said as he turned his token over in his palm. "I should have told him more."

He dropped in his token to block off Hurley on way.

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_illkindalost 2018-06-24 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hurley frowns at Bradley's block, then glances over at the kid.

"I know it probably doesn't help now, but," Hurley slips another token in. "There's nothing stopping you from doing that when you go back,"

Re: Hurley and Brad

[personal profile] st_randedinwinter 2018-06-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)

Brad looked at the tokens he had left over and idly counted them.

"I know," He said, selecting one. "I just hope I have the chance to tell him, that's all."

He dropped his in after careful consideration. He wondered if either of them were going to win at this point.

"How long have you been stuck here?" He asked.
