strangetrip | Check-In: Not-Mother Hen

Kitty sat at the bar with a cup of coffee and her notebook, watching the 'welcoming committee' make themselves busy. Liz was here, as she'd promised Kitty she would be and Kitty gave her a quick smile of encouragement.

One of the worst things about Check-In Days was that you never knew whether it'd be a whole long day of no one arriving, one spectacular fall from the ceiling and dropping dead after another, or anything in between. It made it hard to know what to do with yourself. After awhile, you got used to it and just kept on with whatever you'd do otherwise, and know that if you didn't step up for a new arrival, someone else would. But for someone not used to treating it like a responsibility to be here, especially someone with Liz's anxious need to be perfect at it, Check-In Day could be emotionally exhausting.

So Kitty made sure to have milk warmed for hot cocoa and her plans for the obstacle course handy in case Liz needed something to do with herself. Otherwise, she was working on a modification of Cerebro to see if she could start detecting new arrivals.

Thor digs around in his pockets and finds his key. A keychain with his door number is helpfully emblazoned on the pink faux leather strap in gold characters.

Thor looks down at it.

"174," he reads aloud, then he looks over at River.

"That's a coincidence," she leaned over the bar to select a bottle of scotch and slid it across the bar to him before picking up the still mostly full pitcher of sangria. "I'm in 169, though I warn you the public spaces can be tame compared to the decorative styles of some of the rooms."

Thor takes the bottle in one hand and Stormbreaker in the other.

"After Sakaar, I'm sure it can't be much worse," he says. Sakaar was pretty gaudy on the outside. Colors everywhere. "I take it your room is colorful?"

"My room isn't gaudy so much as it is very.. blue." TARDIS blue, actually. It was weirdly like living in a room where someone had turned the TARDIS inside out but she didn't say that because he wouldn't understand. "And the bed is round, which is generally only an issue if one's companion is quite tall."

She eyed him up and down with an arched brow.

"And there is a very large mirror placed in an altogether interesting spot beside the bed."

Thor's brows furrow slightly at this strangely very detailed description of her room. Thor was pretty sure he knew what she was alluding to, but didn't want to risk a misunderstanding.

That would be awkward.

"Are you propositioning me?" he asks.

"If you'd like," she laughed, and gestured that she'd show him the way to his building, if not his room. "I'm not opposed to the idea, though you've had a bit of a shock with your arrival so I can walk you to your room and when you've recovered I'll only be a few doors down if you decide to take me up on the offer."

Thor smiles.

"You think you'll have enough energy to show me to my room afterward?" he asks. "Asgardians have significantly more stamina than most other species I've known."

He's never known one of River's kind, though.

"Mmmmm," she considered, interest actually piqued. "Well it's only a few doors down, so if I don't you'll probably be able to navigate your way there alone. Or you can stay, but your feet are the problem, they'll probably hang off the curved end on the bed."

"I think I can live with that," he says, still smiling. "I've suffered far worse than a few feet dangling off the edge of the bed."

"So have I," serious, but not overly so, for a brief moment. "Not everyone has though so it's best not to assume."

"When you get to be as old as we are, you're bound to have a few bad life experiences," he says.

"And if you don't what have you been doing with your time?" She agreed, thinking that at least the universe continued to grow and change so there were still mysteries to be solved.

"That's a good question," Thor says, smiling lightly as they walk the hall. "I'm eager to make this experience a good one."

She laughed and teased, "Your experience here at the Inn or my experience inviting you into my bed?"

"I don't see why it can't be both," he says with a smile. "I think it'll be nice to take a vacation for a change, even a forced one."

He probably wouldn't have much time for one when he returned back to Midgard, assuming he wound up back there when he was returned.

"It can be nice enough, but eventually..." it would start to feel like a prison. Or maybe that was only when your 'vacation' was actually IN a prison.

"So far it's been a lovely relaxing bit of time here."

"I imagine it gets dull," he supplies. There isn't exactly a surplus of things to do in a series of small, interconnected buildings.

As they continue down the hallway, Thor looks at the numbers on the doors for some sign of River's door.

And then he finds it. Or at least he thinks he found it. He's not sure he remembered the room number correctly.

Thor gestures at it. "Your room?"

"My room," she confirmed as she unlocked the door and then inclined her head down the hallway to indicate another door just down the passage. "Yours is there."

It was an offer of a graceful way out of their flirtatious banter (verging on outright proposition) if he wanted it as she swung her door open.

He wasn't sure whether or not to take River Song at her word; there'd been plenty of people who were more than happy to flirt with him, but lost the nerve when it came time to make the plunge. Thor supposes that River didn't seem like a woman of nerves.

He smiles, then steps inside the room, hand still wrenched around Stormbreaker's grip.

Psychopaths didn't do nerves, mostly. Even only sort of psychopaths.

"I'm not going to argue against bringing the axe to bed, but if you do we're going to need a safe word."

Thor grins at that.

"I'm sure we can come up with something suitable."

"I'm sure we can." And then she swung the door closed.
