It had taken some time from the attacks but Miguel was slowly coming back to the happy go lucky kid he was when he first arrived. That had to do with his personality and the musical project he had thought about with Curnen. However, that wasn't what was occupying his mind today. That was the date. It was getting close to both his birthday (13 years old!) and Dia De Los Muertos. The festival was actually more important to him than his milestone birthday. With the departures from the inn and people that had lost family and friends in their 'real' lives it would help. Miguel firmly believed that the dead would visit wherever there was an ofrenda with their picture on it so he wanted to do that here. It would also help in his connection to his family knowing that they would be doing the same thing in their village.

Which was why he was sitting in the lobby with a couple of pieces of paper scattered on the small table in front of him that had doodles of an ofrenda like home and list of what he wanted to have in the advertisement. But, what he was currently working on was a mess in front of him. He'd been able to borrow some sugar and egg whites since there wasn't meringue powder at the inn to make a sugar skull. He was currently mixing a little bit of water at a time into the mixture to get the right feel. This was the very first time that he'd made them on his own without his abuelita's help.

He also didn't have a mold, so the skull probably wouldn't look too skull like, but he was trying!

Miguel was happy to see Mack if anyone could help with artistic stuff it was him and Lilith. "Hi. I'm trying to make a calavera um sugar skull and flyers for Dia De Los Muertos. Um the Day of the Dead Festival."

"I can't help with the sugar skull except to help decorate it but I can help with the flyer if you want." He knew about the celebration from his friend Gabriela, but only a little bit.

"Definitely!" Miguel picked up the doodle that he'd drawn that wasn't even close to being what Mack could do. "This is what an ofrenda looks like, well the one at my home anyway."

Mack pulled out another piece of paper from his backpack and began to draw from Miguel's doodle and what he'd put in the comic when his friend had described it. "You'll probably want this take up about half or a third of your flyer. Make it be an eye grabber."

Mack was the best! Miguel would have struggled with the flyer FOREVER! "That looks great. Do you think I should say what Dia De Los Muertos is or just put that in the journal to everyone?"

Mack considered his answer and then said, "maybe a little something about it because people will probably ask you anyway." He knew that he didn't always check the journal like he probably should.

"Okay." Miguel agreed, "maybe like the festival flyers at home. They'd say some stuff, general stuff, enough to make you want to go."

Mack was getting ideas and he began to sketch more. "Okay, what about this?" He didn't put in the words because he didn't know what Miguel wanted to say so he just put in gibberish for that part.

Miguel looked at the flyer that Mack was working on. "That's amazing!" He had to decide what to say but maybe someone could help him with that, too.

Mack loved doing this stuff so he was happy to help. "What exactly is Day of the Dead? I mean I've heard of it and what you said what happened to you, but.." He wasn't really sure what it was.

"It's when the wall between the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead is thin. That's when your familia come to visit you. We set out their favorite things. It's a party of memories and feeling people that are gone close by again."

That sounded both awesome and scary as hell. "Uh, all family all the time? Or um, just the good ones?" Because he didn't want to think of the Wizard's family welcoming him back.

That took Miguel by surprise, he'd never thought of it. "Uh I guess everyone. As long as you have a picture of them, or a drawing, they'll visit. But they only visit their family ofrenda and their cemetery. It's not like they go everywhere."

"I just wondered because there are a couple of bad guys back home that it would not be cool to have them back in spirit form walking around." Mack made a face, "but I like the thought of my parents being there."

He had very vague memories of his parents since they died when he was barely five years old. It was more impressions than being able to picture their faces from memories instead of photos.

Miguel couldn't imagine not having his parents in his life. "It helps a lot especially knowing that it's real and they actually do come and visit. I can't see them anymore but I can here." He put his hand over his heart, "I know here that they are there."

Mack said softly, "I don't really remember what they look like so I wouldn't be able to have a picture of them. But maybe I could have a picture of my grandfather. I mean he's not dead but he's gone from me, would that work?"

"That can work. I mean for us here. We're gone from them and they're gone from us. We're separated by a kind of curtain. Sure it's not a marigold bridge but..." Miguel shrugged. "I'm going to have a picture of my familia on my ofrenda."

Mack liked that idea. He would draw a picture of his grandfather and his friends. "It can be anyone you're missing right? I mean if I put a picture of my friends up, that would be okay?"

"Sure. I'm going to put a picture of Scanlon up, too. I had one from when we had the phones in Europe. Friends are like family so they definitely count." Miguel assured him.
