[Log] On the Advice of Iron Man
Annie did not want to do what she was going to do, but Mr. Stark told her that real heroes did what was right. She knew she had been taking advantage of Liz's good nature and of Liz's guilt. Annie knew it wasn't nice, but it had felt good in those moments because Liz threatened everything she knew back home.
The red-head inhaled and walked into the restaurant where she knew Liz was working. She slid into a booth and waited.
Liz saw Annie and after placing food on someone else's table, walked over and offered the girl a small smile. She thought maybe they were in some sort of neutral place now - the girl at least spoke to her on occasion although often it was to go get something or to clean something or some other sort of favour. Liz didn't mind, though, since she knew Annie was going through some things and Peter was very fond of her. Plus Liz felt guilty for throwing a cog into a little girl's life.
"Hey Annie... hungry? Would you like something from the kitchen?"
Annie almost chickened out. Admitting you were wrong was hard!
"Can you sit down for a sec?" She asked quietly.
Liz paused. She glanced around and then slipped into the booth. The nice thing about working at the restaurant here as opposed to the Crashdown was that there weren't a lot of people at one time, usually, who wanted food and it was a little less formal so occasionally Liz could do something like this and sit down to chat. It was obvious something was up with Annie. "Everything okay?"
Annie played with the salt shaker to distract herself.
"I've been thinking," She said. "that, you know... I should apologize to you."
Liz tried not to look surprised by this, but she was. Partially she was surprised by the words in general, but also Liz wasn't sure why Annie thought she needed to apologize. "It's okay." Even though she had no idea why.
Annie shook her head.
"No, it's not. I've been mean." She said. "Superheroes aren't supposed to be mean. So... I'm sorry."
She squeezed her eyes shut.
"I'm sorry for making you do all those things when you didn't need to," She clarified.
Liz blinked. She had to admit that most of the time what Annie asked for was often inconvenient or heavy or, on one occasion, had destroyed an outfit of hers. Liz had taken the brunt of it because she knew it might be a way for Annie to feel better about the whole situation. Having her apologize made Liz feel mixed emotions - on the way hand, she was grateful. On the other hand, she felt guilty, again. "It's okay, Annie, really. I promise."
"No it's not!" Annie raised her voice at Liz. "Stop being so nice to me! I was mean to you and you shouldn't be nice back!"
Not knowing what to do, Liz sat there and tried to figure out the 'right' thing to say. Should she apologize now? She had no idea.
Annie felt a surge of anger. She didn't know why. She frowned.
"You're not my mom." She repeated the familiar phrase. "You don't need to be nice to me, okay? I still don't want you to date my dad, but I'm letting you because you make him happy. I just... don't want to make you do those things anymore, okay?"
Liz paused, then nodded. "...Okay." She was pretty sure that was a safe response, right? Liz continually felt like she was failing with Annie even though she was trying hard to make the girl happy with whatever she wanted.
Annie felt like she was on the verge of tears. She knew Liz was a nice person and that she hadn't done anything to her, but Liz existing here with Peter made things complicated. Annie wished Liz would argue back or fight back. She wished the girl would do something so her negative feelings could be justified.
Liz could see that Annie was upset and it brought a small frown to her lips. "Annie..."
"Why don't you just go kiss my dad and help him forget about my mom some more," She barked at Liz.
Annie was crying now as she slipped out of the booth and ran away.
Liz felt like she had been punched in the gut. She watched the little girl run away and then rubbed her face with her hands - this was still as complicated as it had ever been.
