Annie was excited to see Peter. When he disappeared, she had been very scared for him. When he returned, she was happy to know he hadn't died back home. While he was gone, she had taken the liberty of taking the web shooters Peter had made for her and practiced. As she marched through the halls with vibrating excitement, Annie couldn't wait to show Peter what she had learned. Her own practice combined with the various lessons from Loki made her feel very confident.

She stopped in front of his door and knocked. She decided to dress up for the occasion in her usual homemade costume. This time she had her web shooters on her wrists too.

When Alec told her that Peter was gone, she didn't believe it. Annie knew Alec wouldn't lie, but she didn't believe him. She went through Peter's room looking for a sign and then the rooftops. His web shooters were gone, but hers remained. As she sat at the highest peak of the inn, Annie came to terms with it.

Several hours of staring off into the distance of the woods, Annie walked into the infirmary. She hoped Loki was here. She sniffled back a cry and looked around for her friend.

It was early in the morning, around 5 AM, when Annie made her way to the cafe. It was earlier than most children her age chose to be awake, but she had been drawn out of her slumber from a bad dream again. She had a cup of white milk on the table along with several blank pieces of paper and crayons. There were also a lot of papers with drawings on it. What would be most noticeable was that all of them seemed similar in what they pictured. In each picture there was a big, black shadow that took up most of the space. It didn't look friendly.

Currently Annie was working on another shadow drawing. Her black crayon was well used at this point.

Annie had her eyes closed in the middle of the lobby. She was dressed in a pink hoodie with a black marker hand-drawn Spider-Man symbol on the center of it where a big 'M' used to be. Suddenly, she felt the hairs on the back of her arm lift up and she could see the darkness forming. She turned swiftly around and Annie pointed.

"There!" She said as Tyrone popped up into view.

Tyrone shook his head, but smiled.

"How you do that is crazy," He said.

Tyrone lowered his hood. This girl is 8 and she's got more skill than I do.

"Okay, okay. I need a break," he said to the young girl. "We'll pick this up tomorrow?"

Annie nodded excitedly and waved.

"Okay!" She said.

Annie flopped down on the couch happily while Tyrone headed for the cafe.

If a thing done more than once could be said to be a tradition, then tradition was observed. The restaurant was set for a party, overflowing with whatever the cooks and bakers of the inn had chosen to create. The bar was stocked from the wine cellar. The bartenders had created a couple of special New Year's cocktails for the occasion in addition to the usual champagne: Blue "Drunk Jack Frosties", frothy pink "Mistletoe Margaritas" and warm boozy hot cocoa.

Caroline had tried to convince each of the guests she knew had musical talent to perform, at least a song or two, but had a playlist ready in case they didn't. For those without their own instruments, the karaoke machine was set up in the lobby, conveniently near the bar so one could find courage as needed first.

Between Christmas and today, the decorations had been changed out - the tree was still there of course, and the mistletoe. But now golds and silvers dominated the colors of the streamers. Sparkling snowflakes dangled and sprays of gold stars. A banner hung over Darryl's head, wishing any who glanced his way a Happy New Year! There was even a disco ball, dug out from some storage closest, turning slowly and sending little shards of light dancing over the pink rose carpet.

Even from the outside, the inn radiated good cheer and hope for the future, as if by sheer will, they could all make it so.

Thor and Loki got an early start, because there was a lot to do. Almost two weeks to the day since their first small-but-successful experiment with snow, Loki was confident that he'd improved enough for a bigger experiment. Still snow, because Thor wanted it and it did seem like a decent way to try something big-ish without causing Loki unnecessary grief with the other residents. (It was an arrival day, so there would perhaps be some grief with any new arrivals, but that was entirely acceptable.)

It was before dawn when they went out into the grounds. Thor called up clouds and loaded them with water so they hung low and heavy, covering the sky so that the sun, when it rose, wouldn't ruin the event. Loki took his frost giant shape and staff (now very familiar to his hand) and concentrated on dropping the temperature. Just around the Inn and grounds, but that was enough to be serious effort.

When the snow first started, the flakes were big and wet, and melted as soon as they hit the ground, which was still on the warm side. As they melted, they cooled the ground. After an hour or so, the flakes were smaller and more powdery - real snow, not glorified slush - and they were starting to stick to the ground.

By mid-morning, the Inn and grounds were covered with a thick layer of snow, and it continued to fall.

***

Meanwhile, indoors and inspired by the snow, Hurley and Xavin decided to try and make cookies. Cooking together was fun, since neither of them exactly knew what they were doing apart from 'follow the recipe', but since the point was 'try to make cookies' they ended up with a lot of cookies. Sugar cookies, gingerbread, all kinds.

There was no way they'd be able to eat all of them.

Instead, they loaded them onto trays and hauled them to the cafe, then brought out various frostings and candies for decorating. This had been completely intentional. Completely.

Annie was excited as she bounded through the hall. Mack promised to train with her. She should have been in her superhero costume, but she had decided to wear a dress with her hair up in braids. Annie was even wearing mascara. They were to meet outside of the inn in the parking lot and go from there. As she headed for the parking lot, Annie felt butterflies in her stomach. She couldn't seem to stop them every time she got to talk to Mack.

Outside, she glanced around. She was early, but she knew he'd be there.

Miguel, with the help of Mack, Mia, and Carlos, was able to put up decorations and flyers all over the inn telling about Dia De Los Muertos. Carlos had helped make the food for the offrendas that people wanted to put up. There were picado banners strung between the temple door and some tables around it. He had set up his ofrenda outside of the temple and of course with Vax's help got the area inside the temple all cleaned up and special if people wanted to go inside and put little welcoming and celebrations of their friends or family that have left there instead of outside.

He very carefully lit a couple of the candles on his table once the sun went down. Miguel had been able to find some marigolds and with permission, picked a few to put the petals around his area. He had a picture of his family that had arrived in his egg and a picture of Scanlan on his phone. Miguel didn't know how to print it off to use it so he had his phone on his ofrenda, with the picture up. Sure his friend had gone home rather than to the Land of the Dead, but he was gone from the inn so that counted. At least it did in Miguel's mind.

His guitar was tucked in his lap where he sat cross legged by a plate of sugar skulls and began to play what he'd been playing this time last year with his little sister and family. Proud Corazon.

Dante sat next to Miguel, with an eye toward the food. He was tempted, but he didn't. He knew how much this meant to Miguel and the others here. He wondered with the veil so thin, if others would be able to see him as the Spirit Guide he was, or if he would look like a Xolo dog still to them.

Mary was helping Caroline with providing the sweets for the party - cupcakes, cookies, Rice Krispies, and a bunch of other things. There was 'real food' provided by the restaurant. there were alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks all themed for the event of Halloween and there is even music to. Caroline's decorating skills where again proven as the entire space looked as if it had been turned into Halloweentown.

Mary's at the last tray of cupcakes that look like they had spiders on them down on the table and sighed. Her work for the party was done and now she can relax. She was already in costume with some blue and pink streaks in her hair and a t-shirt that hung up one shoulder that had a skull in the front. Her makeup was indicative of a punk rocker and she even had a fake nose ring on. Now all she had to hope was that Hathaway was going to keep up his end of the bargain or else she might look up at silly.

It was arrival day, and therefore it was possible that there would be new inmates arriving at any time. Someone else might have delayed this until some other day, but for Loki the prospect of new people was simply a bonus. New arrivals tended to be confused and upset already, any consideration from him was unlikely to change that, so he didn't plan on displaying any. He'd already raided empty rooms and moved much of their furniture into the hallways, that was enough general consideration for one day.

Instead, he took a seat on the front desk (ignoring Darryl, who also ignored him) and wove a spell that would let him be heard by everyone in the Inn. "Good morning, fellow residents. It's been a quiet few weeks, hasn't it?" All the weeks, barring undead invasion, tended to be quiet here. It wasn't exactly maddening, but Loki had spent two months being quiet and exceptionally well-behaved, for him.

"To break the monotony, I give to all of you a rousing game of The Floor Is Lava. For those of you who may not know it, it's a descriptive name. When I call time, the floor will become lava. If you touch it, you will die. Metaphorically, at least, so take this seriously." Those who sincerely wished not to play would have no difficulty; the lava was an illusion, and any 'reality' to it depended on belief or buy-in. For those who sincerely didn't want to play, the floor would simply look odd. This was fun mischief, not viciousness. "Also, because I know some people need encouragement in order to engage with fun, the spell creating the lava has been broken and invested into several individual runes and hidden around the Inn, discoverable only by those playing the game. The lava ends when all of those runes are disrupted - you win - or when no one is left alive to disrupt them and I win." That was only sensible. There was no reason to continue playing a game when no one else was playing it.

"Furniture only, staircase railings are fine. No books, no bags, no cloth, the dead can't speak but if they wish to continue playing they may come back as a lava monster under my dominion." Even in games, there were fates worse than death. "Lava monsters may do as they please, including trying to pull the 'living' into the lava. Should there be a clear non-me winner somehow, I'll owe that person a favor of their choice, at some point in the future."

Did that cover everything? It seemed like it, but he could always make another announcement if he had to. "The floor becomes lava in ten... nine... eight... seven... six... five... four... three... two...." He spaced out the countdown enough to make sure that everyone who wanted to scramble for furniture high ground was easily able to do so.

"...One." Loki released the spell and the floors everywhere in the Inn (for those who believed it or at least bought in to the game) turned to churning hot lava.

At the crest of the mountain, Coc'zac sat atop Nazu's head looking through a glass that Hotor held to his eye. Vokva sat beside them, little more than a pile of bones atop a pile of rocks, and Hafur paced behind them, holding the troops in check. They milled in the pre-dawn gloom, skeletons, wights, zombies, wraiths, and all manner of undead creatures. Periodically, Nazu swept the space behind them with their tail bowling over anyone who'd gotten too close.

The first pinpoint of light had Coc'zac's teeth chattering with excitement in his disembodied head. Today was the day he'd been planning for. Soon, soon the Inn and its occupants would be his. Nazu unleashed a heavy sigh tinged with poison and necrosis. Fortunately the troops were all dead already, and Coc'zac didn't have anything in the way of arms to hit them with.

It fell to Hafur to gesture the troops forward as punctuation to Coc'zac's 'rousing' speech, and together they crept through the portal, avoiding its fizzing and popping edges demarcated in what would be neon blue, if they could still see in color. They couldn't properly hear either, but they were aware of the noise and the danger it marked.

Once they were all through, the advance scouts, four bands of skeleton archers swept quietly as they could through the shadows to take up position around the main buildings, prepared to pick off anyone who exited--for example for a pre-sun jog. And once they'd settled into wary, silent waiting, occasionally interrupted by the pop of a joint or the clatter of toe bones on stone, the next wave rolled in finding shadows to hide in until the residents emerged with the wights taking point. The bone naga and three flameskulls slipped through the lobby doors and stealthed toward the offices, assuming to find the command center there.

It wasn't long before the invaders caught the notice of the residents, and then shouts began to echo through the grey light and journals filled with messages and reminders of siege plans. Several strongly worded messages urged the kids and those without weapons or fighting skills to head for the Temple where the Hallow spell would protect them from unholy undead things.

And so the battle for the Madonna Inn began...

That morning, Loki had finally gotten around to the piece of paper he'd been handed along with his room key, and... well, it was definitely interesting. Apparently not checking in for two weeks in favor of scouting the Inn as a kitten meant that he'd been involuntarily assigned to 'community service' in the infirmary.

It was ridiculous. He wasn't a healer. Oh, his mother Frigga his mother had tried to teach him healing magic, and the theory had been easy enough, but barring one or two minor successes healing his brother of minor injuries, the practical had always escaped him. Eventually his mother had removed healing from his lessons, and not long after that Loki himself had stopped trying.

It was ridiculous.

It didn't matter, though, where he did his reading and thinking, and at least waving vaguely in the direction of being productive would probably very slightly soothe the fears of anyone who thought he, for example, made a habit out of flinging people out of windows. (He'd only done that once. It wasn't a habit.)

Therefore he swung by the library, relieved it of all the medical texts a quick rummage presented, hauled the books to the clininc, and staked out a desk area more or less out of the way. As nearly as he could tell, anyway; regardless, a small wall made of books hopefully separated him nicely from anyone looking for help.

Caroline and Liz had worked hard over a few weeks to gather all the materials and organize everything for the art show gallery. People had donated pieces they wished to display - some more eager than others as the girls had gone around the ask.

There were sketches and paintings from various Otherworlds by Piotr. Mack provided sketches of people at the inn as well as a few scenes from his comic book while Lillith provided her own sketches of various characters from her graphic novel with some painting that ranged from some of the high color styles of the 20th century (Fauvism, Orphism, Abstract Expressionism). Thor, too, provided similar doodles of his own. There were photographs from Peter Parker and a few water colours of landscapes by him too. Liz's contribution had been mostly sketches of plants and scenes from the inn while Caroline had found some of Maya's art work in the Lost and Found. Her work, varying in mediums and styles, were put on displays beside drawings done by Jane. In the middle of the room were displays of stone workings by Kashaw and a few detailed weapons made by Zahra.

There was finger foods provided and punch, both alcoholic and not, and there were seats set up for viewing should people wish to sit and truly take in the art. A few stations were set up around the room for participation - one with some blank easels and paint, another wither water colours, one with charcoal and a fourth with clay. The signs encouraged people to try their hand at some art themselves.
