[GP] puppies and kitties and buns, oh my!

Not everyone had a Trinket, Vex thought during a lazy afternoon tickle fight-turned-cuddle session with her most excellent bear. In fact, most people wouldn't want a Trinket, but that was because they lacked appreciation for the finest things in life. They probably would've liked him better when he was still a cub.

Aaaaaw, Trink had been so fucking cute when he was a baby.

Baby animals were always cute. Even the dangerous ones.

Whether it was a harmless twist to her brother's penchant for pranks or a desire to shake things up a little in this resort prison that was way too quiet or hint of boredom and curiosity about the limited magic Vex had, she couldn't say, but one Conjure Animals later, and her room was full of small, fluffy, cuddly baby animals... and one much larger bear sniffing at them in confusion.

Looking very pleased with herself – and okay, a little surprised at just how many fuzzballs there were – Vex opened the door to her room. "There are lots of people here. Go make friends and have some fun."

The animals tumbled, stalk-pounced, and hopped out of her room and all over the inn looking for people to play with, and just before they were out of her sight, Vex added, "And if you see my brother... you can pee on him if you want."

"Mm..." Snow nodded, giving the little fox another finger to gnaw on with its tiny, pointy teeth. "I had a fox, too. Thompson. He'd play cards with me." By which she meant he mostly chewed on them, but it was better than playing with no one.

"He must have been a very clever fox. Was he from the circus too?" Snow had said Florimund was retired from the circus. Maybe they'd come from the same place. Vex wondered if she'd had more pets as well. Horses maybe, since she was so good with them now.

Snow had to shrug at that. "I don't know. I don't know where most of the animals my father collected came from. But Thompson was one of the ones safe enough that he didn't have to stay locked up."

Vex turned her attention to the kitten trying to dislodge a stuck claw from her braid, to hide the flash of disgust in her eyes. For animals kept in cages, the unspoken cage Snow had shared, and the one Syngorn had been for Vex, whose father had bought "gifts" as well.

That settled it. Some time soon, she was inviting Snow for a sleepover, complete with Trinket cuddles and another hour of fluffy animal friends. Percy would understand, and it would give him extra time in his workshop. For now, though, she gently unhooked the kitten from her hair and set in on the ground. "Go say hello to Snow and her fox friend okay. She's got braids too, if you just have to get in a tangle."

"Two kits." And it was just stupid enough that Snow actually smiled. She held out a hand to the kitten to invite it closer. "My braids aren't as nice, though."

Vex loved getting compliments. Loved hearing she was pretty – and the prettier twin – that she had great hair, that she was charming or clever or brave. But she wasn't a fan of compliments that could be the other person dismissing themselves. Or maybe it was that she heard herself in Snow's words.

"Says who?" she asked with a twinkle in her eye, because she wasn't turning this into a Thing. "You think her her braids are kickass, don't you, fuzzbutt?"

Snow actually, briefly, giggled. "Fuzzbutt?"

Vex punctuated her smirk with a wink – not to be confused with a wink, since she gave those out more sparingly these days, and wouldn't to Snow regardless – that hid the sense of victory she felt for getting a giggle out of the younger girl.

"Well, yeah. I'm not going to name him when he's only going to be around for a little while. Get all attached, only to say goodbye?" She shook her head. "And just look at him; he is a little fuzzbutt."

"It's a new word for me," Snow said, scratching the kitten just at the base of his tail and watching said little fuzzbutt rise up to meet her hand. This may have been deliberate.

"It's a good one," Vex said, laughing as the kitten did just what Snow wanted it to.

"The hoity toity tutors when I was in school would've hated it. Too common even for Common, and not a real word. Kind of like me and Vax. The whole school were assholes."

Gathering up both tiny animals in her lap and watching them adorably bat at each other, Snow only shrugged. "I wasn't allowed to go to school. My father said it was because we had everything we needed... but I think he was too ashamed of me to let me outside."

"Our father insisted we have a proper Elvish education, like if he pretended we weren't othlir, everybody else would too, and he wouldn't have to admit he was ashamed of us." It was an old hurt, one that would probably never heal, and Vex couldn't keep the bitterness entirely out of her voice.

It was a hurt Vex knew how to cope with, though, and she delivered the punchline in a deadpan that would've made Scanlan proud (if Scanlan weren't a shit who'd fucked off), "So you see, our father's not just an asshole; he's an idiot too."

"That is generally my experience of the breed," Snow mumbled, stroking fuzzy backs. "My father was a small man. He only married my mother to own her. And then after she died it was like he came to his senses and there was nothing left but embarrassment and me."

Vex didn't know Snow's father, or what he looked like, but she could easily imagine creative ways of making him a pincushion. Maybe even see a tree grow out of his chest. Someone needed to teach him you didn't own people.

"But you got away." So had Vex and Vax. It made the strong. Survivors.

Snow nodded. "Course he wasn't there much by the time I did. The house was a woman's domain and none of his business, thank God in heaven." That bit of relief was so worn and thin that it simply couldn't be her own, but a shadow of what she assumed Mr. H's had been.

Vex's eyes felt like they were going to roll right out of her head and along the ground. Woman's domain.

Out of nowhere, she laughed. "I bet Regina would've had a few things to say to him."

Snow's eyebrows arched upward at the thought. "Probably, yeah." Something along the lines of what the fuck was he thinking marrying that bitch.

"Ugh." Vex shook her head. "All these cute baby animals running around, and I have us talking about our fathers. It's a wonder you'll have anything to do with me."

She lay back, looking up at the sky. "On the other hand, I conjure up cute baby animals for cuddle purposes. I can't be all bad."

Snow didn't think of it that way. She had talked about home and had neither raged nor wept nor died. Not that she wanted to talk about it necessarily, but it had not been terrible.

"You're okay," she agreed.

"Okay? I'm exceptional," Vex teased with a wink. "Besides, we girls have got to stick together."

Given most men in Snow's experience were fucking useless, she supposed she agreed. But given Vex had both a twin brother she seemed to be attached at the hip to and a boyfriend, Snow only awkwardly grunted in a way that may have been agreement or not.

Vex chose to take it as close enough to agreement. She'd swayed people to her perspective more than once by acting as though they already agreed. And even if it didn't convince Snow, Vex saw it as another way of sticking together.

Even better, it didn't require Snow to talk more if she didn't want to. Win all around.
