[GP] Check-In Day: What a nice surprise; bring your alibis

Every check-in day conjured memories of her first, and all of the others, which inevitably meant she spent the day with Lara on her mind, and Petey, Illyana, and Wyatt. She'd been blessed with dear friends and loves arriving, and yet she never stopped hoping she'd figure out the mess that was this pocket universe and get home.

It was starting to become complicated, though, almost a year later. It would hurt to lose the people she'd grown fond of here, almost as much as it would be good to get home. She didn't know what to do with that feeling, but it was what it was. All she could do was tend the bar with patience and understanding, and keep an eye on the readings her crude energy measuring devices out on the road sent to her.

For all the people that came in and out, it was a quiet day. So between drinks, she spent most of it bent over a notebook with a cup of coffee in her hand, trying to design better instruments to dismantle Yana's shackles. Maybe Percy could help her build them.

In all, Lillith much preferred the blonde's icy clinical gaze to those hot with lust for the 'exotic' or dark with disgust. That was not to say she liked being looked at as some peculiar insect, but at least she understood the interest.

It was the question that finally drew a snort of something like irritation. "Of course I have heard of Limbo. I am a wizard. One who reads. A quicksilver realm of chaos," she said as though reciting by rote. "It was lost to use during the Spellplague."

Illyana could never be certain which worlds had an awareness of the plane, and to what degree. Many thought only of the cartoon caricature of a concept of 'hell' or something similar based on the occasional interaction with demons and the odd traveler between realms. There were those entirely overrun by demons, of course - but they tended to fall into chaos and destruction. For this proud slip of a girl to insist such a familiarity was rare, and the implication that such knowledge was writ in the histories of her world intriguing.

"It was lost to you, perhaps, wizard," marking the choice of title. "Some of us are all too familiar."

Lillith opened her mouth to object that she had not meant to claim anything for those not of her world (since Coby had convinced her that he, at least, did not come from her world), but the woman's familiarity with Limbo was far more interesting than correcting an insignificant misunderstanding.

"Hence the certainty I am not a demon mage?" she asked, curious of the connection. Curious, but also concerned. If this woman was a demon mage, she might be more like Lillith's sisters than herself.

"Yes." That was not to say that Lillith could not be a demonic descendant, nor even to say that she couldn't be a full-blooded demon from another world. To suggest that there could only ever one possible manifestation of a race or creature or person was to have a dangerously narrow view. But Illyana knew Limbo. Lillith was not of that place, that power - not directly. "Your magik is of a different nature," she left it at that. "I know my own craft."

"I do not see magic around you now." It was no judgment or doubt that the woman had magic. She carried herself as one who knew things, like a wizard. "The restraints, they quell your power, I think. Can they not be removed?"

Still, Lillith did not know whether she would remove them if she could. This woman had an unnerving presence that it too much of her will to stand in.

"Not safely. Not yet." Illyana looked at one of her cabled shackles with a faint but familiar irritation, the way one might look at a broken nail. "The makers were clever in their craftsmanship. A clumsy attempt at removing these bonds could result in pain or death."

Lillith's nostrils flared and her eyes flashed red. "I do not know whether to be glad of such measures or angry for them. I have known casters I would wish that on." She would fit her sisters with three matched sets if she could. "I hope that you are not one of them."

"Your sentiment is noted, fellow imprisoned mage," Illyana indulged herself with a roll of her eyes. "Rest assured that for the time being, it is a moot point. I could only do you mundane mortal harm."

"For today, moot," Lillith agreed, gaze narrowing only slightly in response to the other mage's rolling eyes. "I have only now arrived and have much to learn of this place. If we are stuck in truth--" She shrugged expressively. "Then not so moot. To break such magic will require we work together."

"You suppose a great many things." Illyana was done with the albino's open suspicion and flouncing pride for now. Having finished what she'd set out to do, she saw no reason to stand here and encourage more of the same, making to take her leave. "There's nothing for it but to wait and see what mettle we prove to be made from."

I can do no more, Lillith thought, but she did not imagine other mage to be moved by confusion from the newly arrived. It mattered not. Self-interest would prevail if stuck they truly were and she was not responsible.

"It is as you say."

Strangeness of setting and suspicion weighed heavy. She had need of food, rest, and shelter. The shackled woman offering none of three, she also made to take leave, by different route than they had come.
