[GP] Check-In Day: What a nice surprise; bring your alibis

Every check-in day conjured memories of her first, and all of the others, which inevitably meant she spent the day with Lara on her mind, and Petey, Illyana, and Wyatt. She'd been blessed with dear friends and loves arriving, and yet she never stopped hoping she'd figure out the mess that was this pocket universe and get home.

It was starting to become complicated, though, almost a year later. It would hurt to lose the people she'd grown fond of here, almost as much as it would be good to get home. She didn't know what to do with that feeling, but it was what it was. All she could do was tend the bar with patience and understanding, and keep an eye on the readings her crude energy measuring devices out on the road sent to her.

For all the people that came in and out, it was a quiet day. So between drinks, she spent most of it bent over a notebook with a cup of coffee in her hand, trying to design better instruments to dismantle Yana's shackles. Maybe Percy could help her build them.

"Is a year long? It feels like it's been ages to me. Most things here still strike me as strange, but they've become a more familiar sort of strange." He gave her a bit of a self-effacing smile. "Did that make any sense at all?"

"You've gotten used to the culture shock," Emma inferred, "Of a world where elves and dragons aren't common – please tell me dragons aren't common here – but kitschy decor and, if I had to guess, I don't mean an offense if I'm wrong, a wide variety of electrical inventions are mundane. Something like that?"

"Very like that, yes." He considered it a moment. "Have you ever seen that moving drawing play they have on the teevees, what was it... The Hobbit? Rather like that one. We call hobbits by the name 'halflings,' but a lot of it's familiar."

It took a moment for 'moving drawing play' to click, and then another for Emma to realize by drawing he probably meant the Bakshi version, not the new Peter Jackson trilogy. She was still waiting to see the third part of that, or had been. Who knew when she'd get to see it now. "I have. I like the book better, though. It was one of my favorites when I was younger." She'd liked the descriptions of life in the Shire, and at Rivendell the most.

"It's a book as well? Can't say as I've read it," Vax admitted, not that he had a great deal of patience for reading. "The swords and sorcery and monstrous creatures though, those are all a typical week in Tal'Dorei."

"The Hobbit is one book in a larger... mythos Tolkien created. There are movies for some of the rest of it too." As much as Emma liked curling up with a good book or three – as the blanket nests she made of her bed often proved – she'd learned movies were more accessible. And the Peter Jackson movies were visually stunning.

"We have some of those things where I'm from too, although the most monstrous creatures I've found have been people. And not as much sword and sorcery as you, probably, but some of use one or the other." Both, if you were Illyana.
