Even before she knew for certain that it was the first of a month, Snow’s body had started bracing for it. She was wary and tense, preparing to cope with yet more people in the space of the hotel. It seemed that no sooner had she adjusted to whoever had showed up the last time, there was someone new again.

She didn’t want anything to do with the lot of it. That was what those busy women on the welcome committee were for. She didn’t think the committee was a stupid thing, not at all. Focusing on settling new people in kept the lot of them busy and away from her, and that was where she wanted them. They terrified her.

Snow White had only come into the main building to forage for food. The original plan was of course to turn right back around and escape before the expected rush (small or large) of new people to flood in.

But that was of course not what happened. When a universe was a pocket, it had less to focus on and fewer people to fuck with, and so Snow was entirely certain it was fucking with her when she was the one in the lobby when a new face came through the door.

"But you haven't found it here?" Alcuin asked, genuinely wanting to know.

Yasmeen reflected on the fight she'd had with Rebekah and the strip poker with Cold. The corner of her mouth curled in a sly smile. "None that wasn't of my own making."

"I am glad to hear that," said Alcuin. Thinking in part how reluctant he was to raise a sword again.

Then, hoping his interruption with questions was not rude, he added, "And thank you for answering. My name is Alcuin."

Yasmeen herself was less sanguine about the lack of trouble. She'd hate her captivity slightly less if she had enemies to bloody for it. But this Alcuin seemed a gentler soul.

"I am Captain of the Lady Corsair, called Captain Corsair, or simply Captain." Though others abandoned their titles, Yasmeen would not. It would be giving up on her Lady, her freedom.

Alcuin nearly thought it was appropriate to call her 'my lady' until he parsed the words more carefully and realized that she must be speaking of a ship. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Captain," he said politely.

"Is it?" Yasmeen gave a throaty chuckle. "Then you're one of the fair few who would say so." Inclining her head again, this time with a slyness in the approval, she smirked and said, "I applaud your unfailing politeness." In former times, it would have spared his life.

"Ah... yes, well, good manners cost very little," Alcuin said with a little smile. "So you are a ship's captain?"

"And poor manners could cost you your life." At that, her pale, cat-green eyes with their vertical pupils flashed with amusement, before she sobered to reply, "I am captain, yes, of the finest airship in two worlds." It would be three, if the Lady Corsair made it here.

Alcuin blinked at her, wondering if he had misheard. "Airship?"

Ah, another one from a world where skyrunners didn't exist. "A flying ship for air travel. Were my Lady here, I'd offer you a tour. As she seems not to have made the journey, the best I can do is draw her for you."

"Flying?" Alcuin looked surprised. "Like a bird, but an entire ship?"
