[GP/EP] Pie for Pi Day

The only ones who might have known yesterday held any significance were Jag and Sunny, and if they did, they also knew her well enough to know she wasn't big on celebrations. Her one tradition, a new deck for her birthday, hadn't been possible this year, since she hadn't found anything like a tarot deck on Asphodel Station. But that was okay.

Pi Day, on the other hand, was worth celebrating. Everybody liked pie. Last week, she'd talked to Pike, who had been curious and excited about a holiday for pie, and seemed eager to help. Yesterday, she'd put a notice on the bulletin board, hand-lettered over a watercolor scene of pies and more pies. She'd also made ice cream in a variety of flavors, since she wasn't Bobby to freeze it on demand, in less time than it took to prepare the custard base. Today, she left the non-pie food preparation to Ignis, the chicken chef, and anyone who wanted to fend for themselves.

Today, along with Pike and anyone else who wanted to and knew what they were doing, Emma baked pies. Fruit pies and cream pies. Quiche and pot pies. Shepherd's pie and meat pies. Hand pies, savory or sweet, baked or fried. As close as she could get to real Brooklyn-style pizza this far from Brooklyn. Some were decorated with the symbol π or the first few digits of the number it represented, as a vent in a top crust, piped in whipped cream, or carefully laid out in caramelized onions depending on the pie. And because she couldn't resist the visual pun any more now than she could the first time she celebrated Pi Day at the castle, a square apple pie (one of Bobby's favorites) and cherry tart (a recipe she'd learned from Sabine, the fruits a deep ruby red against white cream and pale crust that would have appealed to her cousin's aesthetics).

It wasn't the same as Pi Day at the castle, but there was a bustle and energy as people moved between the kitchens, the bakery, and the cafe, sitting to talk over a slice, or helping each other choose what to taste next. As long as Emma stayed busy, she could enjoy the memories without dwelling on the people she missed.

And there was pie. Everybody likes pie.

He was happy she at least seemed a little more bright and open around him - that was nice.

"Great. And if you're super worried, I can always follow you around like I'm your shadow. I wouldn't mind." Plus the view would be nice. She had a great ass.

“Okay, well. Now you can add that to the list of things that will get you a shattered kneecap.” She gave him a playful scowl. To go from not seeing him for two years do having him shadow her every move was a bit overwhelming. “Plus, you’d have to spend a lot of time sitting quietly. Which is not your forte.”

"Sitting quietly sounds like a terrible idea to me." He nodded in agreement. "I think I'll stick to coming here unannounced from time to time."

"Into the clinic?" She looked around skeptically, "I'm sure I have some friends who wouldn't mind giving you reasons to need to come back here."

"I was just thinking more along the lines of hurt feelings or a headache." he had no interest in getting beat up again.

"Hurt feelings aren't cured in the clinic." If they were, she wouldn't still be mad at him. She grabbed a bottle off of a cabinet and threw it at him, "And they have pills to cure headaches now. No magic needed. Just take two"

She paused, debating whether she wanted to talk to him about something that had been on her mind. With a little shrug, she pushed on, "Actually, there's one way you could see me more but it would require the mansion, and I know that was one of the things you were upset about."

He sighed. Not because she brought up the mansion, but because they were still talking about how he had left. Which he got, but he also wished everyone would move on like Percy and Vex seemed to have.

"What's it for? Dying for some Vegan smoothies? Lentils? Want to finally use that passage way between our rooms?" At the last part he wiggled his eyebrows.

She relished in the sigh, just a little bit. Maybe it was petty to keep bringing it up, but moving on was not her strong suit.

"No, nothing like that." She looked down, a bit sheepish for some reason, "I, um, I was wondering if you could make a room that looks like a temple? Maybe like the one we had at Greyskull?"

Oh.

Scanlan thought about it for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, sure. I can do that." He smiled a little.

"It's, it's hard to explain," She chewed on her lip for a second, "But Sarenrae feels further away here. Like, it's not just the divine gate that she needs to push through to help but there's another layer too. I'm hoping that being in one of her spaces will help, even if it's just a replica."

He walked to reach for her and kiss her. He pictured it in his head and he really wanted to do it, but he didn't.

"Alright. I'll get right on that for you. "

"Thank you," she smiled at him with a familiar warmth that was slowly coming back, "It should only be for a little while. Vax is working on building a temple here."

"He mentioned that. How's that going?" Scanlan was not a physical laborer by any means, so he'd just cheer them on from the sidelines on that one.

"I don't really know. He asked me to help a bit ago but hasn't talked to me about it very much," Pike was a little disappointed by that, but tried not to let it show, "I think he's been working on it with Percy mostly."

"Because Percy's a big fan of the gods." Scanlan deadpanned, then eyerolled. "Alright. Well, I guess I'll just have to be on their butts and make sure they get it done quickly."

"He's a big fan of building and not being bored," Pike corrected, "And I've got the bakery, so it's okay."

Too late Pike. Scanlan was on a mission to be annoying to be productive.

Let's go out on a date sometime

"Speaking of the bakery, couldyou make a few more vegan options? Pretty please."

"Why?" She curled her nose up a bit, "I mean, yeah, I can...but...why?" Baking without eggs and milk and butter felt a little pointless.

Right. She had no idea.

"So, Kaylie sort of convinced me to become vegan. And so I am, for her. Healthier, she says."

"That's, wow," she was at a loss for words. As far as she could remember, Scanlan had never denied himself pleasure of any kind. That kind of restraint was...sort of unfathomable. "Yeah. Yeah, I'll bake some vegan things for you."

"Really?" He perked up. Cause he was 'buying' her baked goods for a while now, but giving them to other people since he wasn't eating them himself. Now he could actually consume some of the food.

Man did he want to kiss her.

He settled for a smile inside. Warm and doting. "That'd be great. Thank you."

"I can't promise they'll be any good," She laughed, blushing a little at the way he looked at her, "You're making me take all the good stuff out."

"Kaylie uses a lot of... what was it." He had to think for a minute. "Applesauce? yeah, I think that was it. Or pumpkin something." He shrugged. "I'll eat it no matter what, as long as you make it, so don't worry about that part."

Pike nodded. Applesauce and pumpkin made some sense, but she still need to experiment. “You’ll eat it no matter what?” She gave him a mischievous look, “That’s good to know.”

Now he was slightly wary, but still committed to his comment. "Just... try not to poison me, okay?"
