[GP] The De Rolo Wedding Reception

The calendar of "Kahl-ee-Fornea" was very different to that of Tal'Dorei. But the spring dance had been a good reminder for the Exandrians (one of them, anyway) that the Renewal Festival would take place more or less this time of year, landing always on the thirteenth day of Dulahei. It seemed a fitting time to set the 'small family dinner' in celebration of the marriage of Vex and Percy.

...Yeah, but no. Because Vax'ildan didn't mind a bit of revenge for their having done the thing without so much as telling him for several weeks, and because his sister always deserved the best of everything anyway, the garden had a whopping lot more than that for the happy couple as they opened the doors onto what first looked like pitch blackness. Until the big, white-hot spotlight snapped abruptly on to glare down on top of the pair with blinding scrutiny.

A familiar voice sang out from beyond, his ever-charming booming and crooning amplified to fill the whole of the outdoors by something called a 'microphone,' Scanlan using all his singular panache to belt out a melodic tune:

"There she is, Mrs. De Rolo
There she is, your ideal
The dreams of a million boys and girls who want to find love in Emon City
For Vex may turn out to more than Baroness of the first house of Whitestone and Grand Mistress of the Hunt
There he is, Mr. De Rolo
There he is, your ideal
With so much brooding and tinkering he took the town by storm
With his all-Whitestone face and form
And there they are
Walking on air, he is
Fairest of the fair, she is
There they are - Mr. and Mrs. De Rolooooooooooo~"

A resounding wave of applause, murmuring, cheers, and laughter broke out all around the newlyweds - one such unbridled merry cackle absolutely coming from the bride's brother - and Scanlan's tone changed immediately to a much more vibrant, excited, sporting-event-enthusiasm style of announcement: "Ladies and Gentlemen - it's the DE ROLO FAMILY!"

The strands of bulb lighting popped into yellow-soft brightness all at once, revealing the guests gathered around dozens of tables artfully set with dinner places enough for everyone at the Inn. Each table included flowers, linens, and garlands all matched in smart Whitestone-Blue, darker Owlbear-Blue, black and white with touches of gold accents, all thanks to Caroline's management. The outdoor area so far as one could see had been dressed in one of Lillith's illusions to mimic a beautiful forest clearing at purple-dusk with fireflies dancing, the shapes of buildings and foothills in the distance distinctly cast to look like the city and castle of Whitestone. Ignis and Emma stood by putting a few final touches on what they'd all started calling 'fancy barbecue,' an enormous buffet of haute cuisine smoked and grilled meats with artful sides, a table beside them holding up the massive layer cake Pike had tirelessly fussed into perfection. So many others had come together to help or to wish the de Rolos well - but there would be plenty of time over the evening for them to be thanked and recognized with food, drink, song - there was even an area marked out as a dance floor.

A freshly bathed Trinket in his very own bowtie lumbered up to Vex'ahlia to rumble and lick her face as the pair finally had a moment to react to the spectacle. At ground-level, a small disc-like device with a large serving spoon taped to it had been labeled with marker as Ensign Stubby, rolling its way between tables and chairs while balancing a large, many-times-stabbed basket of flower petals (with a handful left nestled in its giant spoon) on top of its flat surface like a drunken flower girl to finally bump into Vex and Percy's shoes. ...And possibly the best thing about their stunning surprise? That Peter boy had got the whole thing on VHS.

Some part of Lillith lit up with a bright warmth that Curnen trusted Lillith's friendship enough to speak about Zahra to her. She wished, very much, that she could make this less painful for Curnen, but she could not see any way to do it. So she listened, she waited, she did not rush to give answers to problems that could not be solved.

And when she did speak it was to say, "She will not bother you again," first in such a tone as to be clear that Lillith would make certain of it. "For the rest... Those who have need know why you cannot stand to be around my cousin. We do not expect you to be civil or even to acknowledge her existence." It was a risk, but one Curnen deserved for Lillith to take, so she reached for her friend's hand. "Do not feel you must shy and hide and avoid. Anywhere I am, you are welcome. If Zahra is uncomfortable with your presence, then she can walk away."

"Yes," Curnen said, entirely certain. "Yes I do. None of you would've appreciated if I fucked up spa day. I didn't even have time to tell myself reasons not to rip her hair out just now. Just to... not do anything. Anything at all. And I can't believe that worked. Keeping away ain't about her comfort. It's about me trying to function."

Not that she was certain being in the same room would invariably end in violence, the spring dance had gone fine. Because there were fifty other people in the way. But she liked experiencing other non-rage or sadness emotions.

"Oh...oh, darling." Lillith ignored the food between them and leaned to give her friend a huge, warm hug. "I am sorry this hurts you so."

She frowned then, expression both patient and thoughtful. Her thoughts, they were many. She would have to speak to Coby and Vex about some of them. For now, the important thing, she thought, was to support Curnen. "It feels very unjust that Zahra's arrival should deprive you of the comfort and company of the people who love you. Is there something we can do to help? What would Tufa do if this happened?"

Curnen leaned into the hug, however awkward it was to blend that with the questions Lillith was asking. She didn't even have to think about the answer to the second question. "If this were a Tufa problem," she said softly, "your role would be to close ranks around her and tell me to mind my own business. My role would be to find whatever solace with my own kin."

Of course, depending on the circumstances and the families involved, there may be a rounding up of cousins and baseball bats, but that seemed like it would only cause distress if she described it.

Lillith had no wish to speak ill of the people who had birthed her very dear friend, especially when Curnen missed them so terribly. Still, that struck her as a perfectly terrible solution.

"Zahra may be my cousin, as near to me as a sister, but I feel no need to protect her from perfectly legitimate conflict with someone else I love. She can defend herself. And she also has Kash. It is unjust and unfair that you should lose all of us because three good people have too many feelings between them."

Curnen shrugged. "You asked. Kin and clan take care of their own. They ain't married, I know, and it's complicated, but they are in all the ways that matter. I'd be the interloper who needs to get the fuck out of the way and that's that."

Lillith nodded. "I think it is different because we have all chosen each other, including you. Once that choice is made, we are...very reluctant to unmake it."

She thought about it awhile longer and then added, "It was more like you describe at home in Wildemount where Tieflings band together in kinship groups for protection."

Regardless, it offended Lillith's sense of justice. "For now, I must trust that you will tell me if there is some way that I can help." She tipped her head then, studying Curnen to judge whether she ought not mention what else she had seen, but...

"That offer includes Pike." She frowned in the gnome's direction where she seemed to be talking closely with Scanlan. That relationship she understood even less than this mess with Curnen and Zahra.

Curnen's expression withered, looking less tragically without a certain place with people she'd come to love and more openly annoyed. Nothing to distract from a huge problem like a relatively small and irritating one.

"She apologized. I thanked her for the apology."

"Did you?" Lillith asked, all innocence in her expression and suspicion in her voice. "I should have thought you told her to shove it up her ass." She gestured dismissively with one hand. "From your expression only, of course."

"That may've been the subtext," Curnen admitted. She shrugged. "I mean, I get it, I hit a nerve. But then I see that," she nodded toward Pike and Scanlan, "and I just... the last man who cut me that deep don't have a windpipe anymore."

Never mind that it was her own father.

Lillith sighed as she followed Curnen's gaze. "I confess, I do not entirely understand, either."

She did not wish to breach the confidence of Pike's confessions to her over tea, but this behavior was so unlike the Pike she knew, she hardly knew how to speak of it. Perhaps Vex might be able to help her understand.

"I do not know what to say about how she has treated you. It is wrong."

"It's a grievous insult among my people, rejecting someone's music," Curnen murmured. "Not that she'd know that."

She shook her head. "I don't wanna talk about her anymore."

If Pike had even introduced herself to Curnen, if she had ever asked about her people or her world, she would have known it. Lillith had never had to ask and she knew it. But Curnen did not want to speak of it anymore, and Lillith would honor that.

"I thought Percy looked rather well with cake in his face," she said innocently. "Did he not?"

Curnen dissolved into a fit of helpless giggling. It was so stupid and childish and juvenile and... well, the sort of thing she could see herself doing at a wedding, even if Bliss would have smacked her upside the head for it.
