[OTA] S'more S'mores, Please (joint EP: Emma and Jag)

Usually when Emma couldn't sleep, she cooked. Last night had been the opposite. She'd started trying out new marshmallow variations, completely lost track of time, and spent most of the night in the kitchen instead of doing reasonable things, like sleep. She'd grabbed a nap in the wee hours, though and another after lunch, and now was wide awake.

She also had batches and batches of homemade marshmallows.

Around sunset, Jag helped her set up a table near the pool and outdoor bar, that she loaded up with the marshmallows, graham crackers and other cookies, chocolate and berries and spreads and bacon. Anything somebody might think of that would make a good s'more, from the traditional basic graham, milk chocolate bar, plain marshmallow, to bourbon marshmallow s'mores with smoky bacon. If the inn was anything like the castle, word of mouth would spread quick enough, and the food wouldn't go to waste.

Jag had started a fire right beside the table, but after having had his own fill of s'mores, he had left Emma to meeting the demand of other hotel residents. He was sticking around to make sure the fire was behaving just right, though. So he was lying on his back a little way from Emma's table, and the fire he was still controling, weaving and sculpting additional fire between his hands, keeping a distracted ear on what was going on nearby.

[tag Emma or tag Jag. food and fire, what could be better?]

"...wow," Jag very eloquently responded. "That sounds a lot more complicated than my thing." Foxes with multiple tails and warlocks and other magic abilities. Jag was fine sticking to simple, himself.

"It's not complicated." Mack shook his head. "It's just you might get another tail and you might not." He crinkled his nose, "the kitsunes are the only ones that have rules like that." Mack chuckled, "at least I think so, I haven't met a lot of Changers."

"Taking out evil warlocks sounds complicated," Jag assured the kid. That was the bit he'd mostly identified as such. He would be happy never using his fire offensively again.

"It wasn't just me." Mack assured him, "and it was kind of more luck than anything." He was honest about that. "If my friends were kitsunes they would have earned an extra tail, too."

"Couldn't be just luck if it earned you that tail, could it?" Jag pointed out. A half-smile was playing on his lips; he was familiar with that way of downplaying what you'd achieved. Emma was like that, too. Both of them.

"Not just luck, but luck helped a lot." Mack said with a small smile of amusement. "My friends and I were the only ones there that were immune to the bad guy's magic. There was a horn that helped defeat him." Only Mack and his friends could use it because of their immunity.

A horn? "Definitely sounds complicated," Jag remarked, amused.

"Well it was more that we destroyed the horn. The horn kind of hypnotized adult Changers and my friends and I were the only ones there that weren't adults."

Mack gave him a quick grin. "So, you could say that I defeated a magical horn to get my second tail."

Jag laughed, and shook his head. "Trying to make it sound simple now, are you?"

"Not really." Mack said but then added, "just truthful. I was scared and lucky, more than skillful. I hadn't even learned how to turn very long before we went up against the wizard."

With Sakura, that hadn't been luck. That had been stupid and gullible followed by clever and sneaky.

"Well, here's to luck," Jag said with a small smile. He was still glad his own fire was simpler than that. "What are you looking to do with your fire, then?"

"Understand it." Mack said sheepishly. "My grandfather thinks I need to learn patience and that I'll learn when I'm meant to learn." He made a face, "sometimes it's hard. I want to know stuff NOW, and now I don't even have that. I guess I really will have to learn when I'm meant to learn it."

And it sucked. Patience had never been Mack's strong point and it was even less now.

"If there's something we have a lot of, here, it's time," Jag pointed out. "If you want to practice together, we can do. But I'm not sure I really understand my fire," Jag warned him. If that was Mack's goal, Jag wouldn't be much help. "I just... know it. Feel it."

Mack would take know it, feel it over just winging it and hoping it works by the seat of his pants.

"Practicing would be great. That's really all I do back home with our teacher. I can shoot fire arrows really well." It came easily to him, "but that's all I've ever really done to 'control' it."

"I've never tried that," Jag stated thoughtfully. Fire knives, absolutely. He'd had a great number with Gillie. But fire arrows? Never. He wondered how different it would be. He gave the kid a half-smile. "Something for you to teach me, too?"

Mack puffed up a little bit with pride thinking he had something that he could trade for Jag's help that he could actually teach. "I'd like that." He said honestly. "I'll show you a different kind of target practice."

"Well back home the only training I have is with with my three friends in a special class. No one knows that it's really training, everyone else that aren't Changers just think it's a special PE class, which it kind of is I guess. Anyway, we always change into our forms when we're practicing so you'll be learning fire arrows from a three tailed fox."

He shot him a grin.
