[Backdated 8/25 - mini-GP open to team demilich or by request] is anyone dead?

Coming back to consciousness hurt, significantly more than Loki remembered hurting in recent memory. There didn't seem to be a single part of his body that wasn't in some kind of pain, and on top of that he became aware, very quickly, of an odd whistling emptiness that said too much magic. He couldn't even have called one of his knives.

All of that being the case, he didn't move. If the fight was still going on, he intended to stay down. For a little while. Until he had something to act with or on. Or until he legitimately passed out again; that seemed horribly likely, with the way his head was swimming and the warm-wet of blood flowing out instead of staying in.

The desert was essentially silent, though, for the definition of 'silence' that included the sounds of wind and ordinary movement. Footsteps. Voices.

He wasn't dead, then. Was anyone else?

"Yes, the dark-haired one with the magic," Thor says, as if there were some other male on the battlefield using magic. "He was always a much more talented spellcaster than I was."

Thor takes another large bite of his pizza slice. It's nearly gone now; he's quickly demolished it. "Is fighting -- helping people your full-time job or your part-time job?"

Though the magic that Thor had was definitely impressive - and showy. Very showy. Not a bad thing, though.

"Full time," Carlos said, grabbing another slice of the pizza for himself. "I'm what we call a Warden - kind of wizarding enforcement and military thrown into one. We fight - too much, and we try to protect normal people in our areas from the supernatural. Sometimes I think we're fighting a losing battle there."

"Too much supernatural, not enough Wardens?" Thor asks, finishing off the rest of his slice.

Carlos normally affable face went still for a moment. "Something like that," he said after a moment, remembering all his friends who had been killed in the attack in the Congo, not long after taking a full on assault from the vampires. "Put it this way, you normally have to be at least a hundred years old to become a Regional Commander. I did it at twenty three. Not really a record I wanted."

"Why not?" Thor asks. He eyes Carlos, confused, as he reaches for another slice of pizza. "I do not know why you wouldn't be proud of it."

"Mostly because a lot of my friends died, friends who should have had a chance first." Carlos knew well enough that they had in mind for him to become a regional commander as soon as was practicable, but no one anticipated quite when he did. He led the new guard of wizard, young, less hide bound, more willing to see what was going on - he was always going to end up in a position of responsibility. He just did it so damn well.

"Oh," Thor says to that, and he finds that he feels more sympathy for Carlos' situation than he might have had before Ragnarok, before Thanos. "I' am sorry about your friends. I had a lot of people die on me recently. I feel your pain."

Carlos nodded briefly, though he regretted it as everything still ached. He'd had healing, but he knew it would take a while for the aches and pains to go - he was still technically healing from his last round of damage. "Sucks, doesn't it?" he said after a moment, before flashing Thor a smile. "Still, we won. And that was an awesome way to do damage to that bastard."

"Your shields were amazing," Thor says, cracking a grin. "I imagine you were able to protect a lot of people. You certainly helped to protect my friends."

Thor takes another bite of his pizza.

"If there is anything I can do to return the favor, simply say the word."

"They're useful," Carlos agreed. "Normally I use them to absorb attacks, reduce the energy in them, it's much harder to make them solid like that. And hey, I definitely protect anyone who stands against an enemy."

He smiled slightly. "Well, hopefully it won't be needed, but thank you." He could make fun of it, but he could tell that Thor utterly meant it, so treated it with the reverence in which it was intended.
