Liz, as Loki knew very well, tended to be... not passive, per se, but submissive to what she saw as others’ needs. Eventually she broke down and did something stupid or cried or both, but this seemed like neither of the above. This was a spark of assertiveness.

He approved. He’d always thought Liz could stand to be a little less accommodating, and taking charge in one part of life tended to spread. Messily, in his own case, but things more or less worked out well eventually.

As agreed, he appeared in the lobby, ready to head out into the wilderness (such as it was) as soon as The girl turned up.

The last check-in day had come and gone as quietly as most other days, but Tony had made it a point to linger around the lobby every two weeks. It was tradition, after all. You could only be cynical about a pink eldritch prison for so long before you felt the need to inject some decorum, however half-assed.

During a quiet trip to a Wisconsin suburb Otherworlds, Tony had snagged an old Harley-Davidson calendar at a garage sale (why not), unique in that the previous owner had filled every single square with national holidays. Today was National Linguine Day. Truly, the most hallowed of all holidays. To celebrate, he made an order to the kitchen to bless the inn with trays of pasta, inclusive to all diets. No gluten or dairy for him, see how long that lasted.

Despite the swift approach of fall, San Luis Obispo boasted sun and 70 degree weather, so Tony arranged a chair and table outside and fiddled with a little mechanical orb the size of a jawbreaker. He prodded at its insides with a screwdriver while his half-eaten pasta dish sat ignored, his glasses magnifying the orb's internal features.

One of the advantages, and there were several, of having other worlds constantly available was that trade became a very entertaining and useful way to pass time. The massive hides that Valkyrie so enjoyed delivering could be cured, cut down, used, yes... but they could also be cured and taken to the floating city, exchanged for new books, specialized medicines for the infirmary. The odd steam-focused world was good for metal and glass, and the weirdly short dwarves of the ancient world were very impressed with the potency of Asgardian liquor, meaning precious metals, gems, various cloths? All were accessible if you were willing to put the various kinds of work in.

The medicines of the floating city were what gave him the idea to evaluate the plant life of the ancient world, see if there might be something useful there. So he'd opted to accompany his fiancée on one of her hunting trips, albeit without any real intention to assist her in bringing down prey. Valkyrie didn't mind and didn't tease - they enjoyed each other's company whether or not they were occupied by the same project.

At the moment, Loki was inspecting a brilliant and oddly fleshy red flower. A succulent of some kind, perhaps, though the rest of the plant didn't look like one. Pretty, if too large to be readily decorative in the Inn. Valkyrie was nearby, but the question of whether the bright red was an indicator of poison or an eat-me invitation occupied him enough that he'd lost track of Valkyrie's movements.

Bo should really keep cooking to the professionals. The thing was, she had been getting so tired of chicken that she was desperate for a steak or something. Dyson had brought in deer meat and she decided she was going to make a steak with some of it - she really was good at burning things.

She walked out of the kitchen that was slightly smokey with a very black and crispy steak. She had hoped the new lighting of the restaurant itself would have give new life to the deer meat, but it didn't. She sunk into a nearby chair and sighed. Maybe there was some meat salvageable on the inside?

When Alec told her that Peter was gone, she didn't believe it. Annie knew Alec wouldn't lie, but she didn't believe him. She went through Peter's room looking for a sign and then the rooftops. His web shooters were gone, but hers remained. As she sat at the highest peak of the inn, Annie came to terms with it.

Several hours of staring off into the distance of the woods, Annie walked into the infirmary. She hoped Loki was here. She sniffled back a cry and looked around for her friend.

She was still getting used to being stuck in the Madonna Inn. She was pretty sure it was Hera's fault - thanks Hera - and while she found the demigod of Hephaestus a little entertaining, he was covered in grease a lot and reminded her of her husband too much. Aphrodite had, however, felt the presence of two very powerful people and that was interesting.

"Tell him I'll kick his ass if he tries anything," Sunny had offered when Corbie had told her that she had possibly gained another teacher. The older girl had her own experiences with trickster gods and their guidance and had strong opinions on the whole thing, but Corbie was a grown woman and she was hungry to learn more and she could try it couldn't she? Besides, Loki was Thor's brother and Thor loved and trusted him. It didn't follow immediately that she should trust him, but it was a good endorsement of a person. Not to mention Annie adored him.

When it came to the inn and its inhabitants, she found you had to get particular about the difference between knowing someone and knowing someone. It was a small environment with not a lot to do, you ended up knowing at least a little of everybody's business. But people were a lot like labyrinths. You could walk all around the outside of one, get an idea of size and shape and know there was a lot of winding around inside, but until you actually found the door, let alone access to the path, you didn't actually know them, really. And she hadn't been sure how to proceed. Loki was Thor's brother, yes, and she adored Thor, and they'd exchanged small talk before in the library when he came for materials or the clinic when she came by looking for Jackson or whatever else, but.

So okay. Doing better about that. Here was her chance. And maybe she'd get a teacher out of this or maybe she wouldn't. She might not get it or he may not like her. It was a test. Nothing was settled yet.

She had been about to go look for Loki in the clinic when she happened to find him in the tennis court instead, balancing on the top of the net. She watched for a time. She supposed this made sense, given Annie was all excited about the things Loki was teaching her, but it was still kind of a surprise to see him actually... doing it. She hooked her fingers in the chain link fence. "What're you doing?"

I've been thinking (don't tell me, yes, I know that's a dangerous thing) and I've had some ideas I kind of wanted to mention, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to throw out there, and that meant I didn't write anything.

So I'm just going to toss out my ideas like spaghetti and see what sticks.

(Please don't throw spaghetti at the wall. The best way to tell if it's done is to take a bite. You'll know if it's al dente.)

[hand sketched knife, bowl & whisk, eggs, and a few veggies]

I've been thinking about the menus for May. Do you have any favorite dishes you'd like to have? Anything you've been missing maybe? Or things we have but you want more often? As long as we have the ingredients (and who knows, maybe, if we make it clear we want it, something new will be added to the food stores), I'm happy to make it, or learn if you'll teach me, or try to reverse engineer it from your descriptions (as long as you're willing to taste test along the way for feedback.

[hand drawn flourish, complete with sketched pen at the end]

I know we had a sign-up way back when where people listed what subjects they could and were willing to teach, but from what I remember, a lot of those things were more in-depth topics that were going to take investment of time and effort to learn. But I was wondering, what about more discrete options, demonstrations, things you could maybe pick up the basics at least in an afternoon.

Like how to make an omelet. Or turning doodles into something more. Or, I don't know, how to foxtrot.

Kind of an "each one, teach one" thing. Somebody picks something they're good at doing and an afternoon, and whoever wants to learn they can. And then another day, someone else teaches something they're good at.

I'm probably not explaining myself very well. It's just an idea.

So, I have a question. And I don't know who to ask.

When we arrived here, we were assigned certain rooms. Given the key and everything. What if... What if we wanted to change where we're sleeping? Can you do that or is that not allowed. I mean, this place can be pretty particular with the things it requires. And, clearly, it likes to have fun with us, even if we won't find it as funny.

I'm not as good at words as some.

What if two people wanted to share a room. Would they pick one of their own rooms? Would they have to take a new room? Like... Do we have to get permission from the inn manager or something?

[Bucky is pretty sure that his questions are going to come off as stupid, that it is information everyone should already know. Even if he doesn't know it.]

Who would I talk to about changing my room, I guess?

Need someone to come put me down.

No, really.

I don't know how it happened but I know what happened and everyone walking by my door smells delicious and the only reason I haven't done anything is this severe light allergy I thought was no longer a part of my life, so someone get the hell to Safari Room with a wooden stake, please.

Loki had bolted almost the moment he heard about a door opening to a new world. Yes, he knew it was temporary, that on previous such openings there was no more chance of escape than there was from the Inn. It was a new place, that was enough to disappear in for... as it turned out, roughly two minutes. It wasn't exactly small, but it was certainly limited.

Fortunately, the festival-like atmosphere was entertaining enough to walk through, and the various games were... interesting. About half of them, he thought, were very clumsily rigged to bilk players. It was obvious enough that Loki rather thought people expected the cheating, that it was meant to be part of the experience. Still, the clumsiness was offensive when there were any number of ways to get the same result without being so obvious.

Naturally, he un-rigged a few of those in passing, and on a couple of the un-rigged games he set a few spells to ensure a higher winning percentage for players than they might otherwise have. Subtly, of course.

He paused briefly at a sort of shoot-the-duck game, pondering what if anything to do to it.

The wheel of the year turned and turned and Curnen found herself at an anniversary of sorts that she flatly didn't want to be remembering but got stuck on a loop of anyway.

This time there was no taking the hell off into the wilderness, though. Nor were there endless, circular recitations of "The Queen of Argyll." Rather than be poisoned by the memory of someone she still hated like everloving fuck, she focused on remembering the friend she'd lost. And besides this being Kash's song, she figured it was never a bad time around here for "John Barleycorn." Perched on the roof with her guitar, she sang of John Barleycorn's dying and rising again, subtle magic weaving into her voice to lead anyone lost in their little bubble world this way.

There was three men come out of the west their fortunes for to try,
And these three men made a solemn vow, John Barleycorn must die,
They ploughed, they sowed, they harrowed him in, threw clods upon his head,
And these three men made a solemn oath John Barleycorn was dead.

It was Kash's song, in her mind, but you talked to half the people around here and it wasn't a bad fit for them, either. From her vantage point, she watched the road.

Dyson confirmed a week ago they found some sort of thing that could help with trial number two, but that was as much as he knew and they had to 'wait' for the trial to start. Apparently it wasn't just something Bo could press a button for and it happen. So for a week now, she had been walking around impatient. By the end of the week, she was sure it wasn't going to happen.

She found herself bored and walking into the infirmary - she was pretty sure Loki would be there.

If a thing done more than once could be said to be a tradition, then tradition was observed. The restaurant was set for a party, overflowing with whatever the cooks and bakers of the inn had chosen to create. The bar was stocked from the wine cellar. The bartenders had created a couple of special New Year's cocktails for the occasion in addition to the usual champagne: Blue "Drunk Jack Frosties", frothy pink "Mistletoe Margaritas" and warm boozy hot cocoa.

Caroline had tried to convince each of the guests she knew had musical talent to perform, at least a song or two, but had a playlist ready in case they didn't. For those without their own instruments, the karaoke machine was set up in the lobby, conveniently near the bar so one could find courage as needed first.

Between Christmas and today, the decorations had been changed out - the tree was still there of course, and the mistletoe. But now golds and silvers dominated the colors of the streamers. Sparkling snowflakes dangled and sprays of gold stars. A banner hung over Darryl's head, wishing any who glanced his way a Happy New Year! There was even a disco ball, dug out from some storage closest, turning slowly and sending little shards of light dancing over the pink rose carpet.

Even from the outside, the inn radiated good cheer and hope for the future, as if by sheer will, they could all make it so.

Thor and Loki got an early start, because there was a lot to do. Almost two weeks to the day since their first small-but-successful experiment with snow, Loki was confident that he'd improved enough for a bigger experiment. Still snow, because Thor wanted it and it did seem like a decent way to try something big-ish without causing Loki unnecessary grief with the other residents. (It was an arrival day, so there would perhaps be some grief with any new arrivals, but that was entirely acceptable.)

It was before dawn when they went out into the grounds. Thor called up clouds and loaded them with water so they hung low and heavy, covering the sky so that the sun, when it rose, wouldn't ruin the event. Loki took his frost giant shape and staff (now very familiar to his hand) and concentrated on dropping the temperature. Just around the Inn and grounds, but that was enough to be serious effort.

When the snow first started, the flakes were big and wet, and melted as soon as they hit the ground, which was still on the warm side. As they melted, they cooled the ground. After an hour or so, the flakes were smaller and more powdery - real snow, not glorified slush - and they were starting to stick to the ground.

By mid-morning, the Inn and grounds were covered with a thick layer of snow, and it continued to fall.

***

Meanwhile, indoors and inspired by the snow, Hurley and Xavin decided to try and make cookies. Cooking together was fun, since neither of them exactly knew what they were doing apart from 'follow the recipe', but since the point was 'try to make cookies' they ended up with a lot of cookies. Sugar cookies, gingerbread, all kinds.

There was no way they'd be able to eat all of them.

Instead, they loaded them onto trays and hauled them to the cafe, then brought out various frostings and candies for decorating. This had been completely intentional. Completely.
