[GP] Check-in Day

The wheel of the year turned and turned and Curnen found herself at an anniversary of sorts that she flatly didn't want to be remembering but got stuck on a loop of anyway.

This time there was no taking the hell off into the wilderness, though. Nor were there endless, circular recitations of "The Queen of Argyll." Rather than be poisoned by the memory of someone she still hated like everloving fuck, she focused on remembering the friend she'd lost. And besides this being Kash's song, she figured it was never a bad time around here for "John Barleycorn." Perched on the roof with her guitar, she sang of John Barleycorn's dying and rising again, subtle magic weaving into her voice to lead anyone lost in their little bubble world this way.

There was three men come out of the west their fortunes for to try,
And these three men made a solemn vow, John Barleycorn must die,
They ploughed, they sowed, they harrowed him in, threw clods upon his head,
And these three men made a solemn oath John Barleycorn was dead.

It was Kash's song, in her mind, but you talked to half the people around here and it wasn't a bad fit for them, either. From her vantage point, she watched the road.

"Weird stuff happens sometimes, but it's not bad," Peter concedes. "Did Mr. O'Neill tell you about the boundaries at all?"

"A little. He mentioned that people have tried to escape too.... I have to admit I plan to try as well, even if it's not going to work."

She had to try for herself in order to feel like she had done everything, she thought. She looked at Peter.

"I'm assuming someone else here can fly and has tried to go straight up, right?"

"Yeah, I know Tony and Thor tried," he says, the name Tony feeling weird and unnatural. He'd moved across three different names for Tony in the over half-year Tony had been here, and though Tony came to him far more naturally than it had in the past, when he moved onto Tony's latest title, Tony reverted to being one those names that didn't feel quite right in his mouth when he said it. "I know Thor tried teleporting, too, using the, uh -- using the Bifrost."

"I coincidentally just came from there. We were speaking to Heimdall for some help... It's troubling it can't be used here, but that probably means we're really isolated wherever we are."

She did not like feeling so confined. However, Sam was thankful she still had powers. If they were taken away again, she would be very unhappy.

"You wouldn't happen to know where Thor is staying here, would you?"

"Yeah, he's staying in room 174. It's called Krazy Dazy, so it has these pink flowers on it. If you go out that way--" Peter gestures. "--and out the door, then up the stairs, you should see it on your left."

Samirah took mental note of the directions and then nodded when she decided she knew where to go if she wanted to seek Thor out.

"Hopefully your version is a little more... polite, than mine."

"Well, he's not really impolite," Peter says. Peter would probably rate him at average levels of politeness, at least from their timeline. Who knew whether or not that'd register as polite in Samirah's world. "What's your Thor like?"

Sam pulled a face and then glanced around out of habit to make sure no one saw her be so openly disrespectful.

"He's... well, he's very confident and... loud. He tends to be very gassy and is obsessed with Earth TV shows. He's really looking forward to the last season of Game of Thrones."

"Our Thor's pretty confident, too. I don't really know how he feels about Earth TV, though. We watched a couple of scifi movies together and he seemed to like them. And Homeward Bound, but he got pretty worked up over it and so we watched Air Bud afterward."

Thor definitely had a soft spot for animals. Especially dogs and snakes, Peter had noticed.

"How is his personal hygiene?"

Sam shook her head.

"You don't actually have to answer that, sorry. My friend Magnus has rubbed off on me a little."

Peter blinks at that.

"Well, he doesn't smell," Peter says, not sure how to answer that. "He usually looks pretty clean unless he's just come back from training or chopping wood."

Peter presses his lips together. "Did you not like Thor back where you came from?"

She considered how to answer Peter's question.

"I wouldn't say I don't like him, but... the gods in my world are very much spoiled and don't really think much about mortals."

She could not bring herself to mention that being Loki's daughter also brought suspicion to her wherever she went.

"Thor's one of the Avengers." Peter'd mentioned them before when asking her about timelines. "They're a team of superheroes back home. He's helped to save Earth a few times."

"He helps back home too. The giants are scared of his hammer... In fact, we were on a quest to find it as it went missing before I showed up. If the giants knew his hammer was missing, they'd definitely attack Midgard."

Sam didn't like how Loki was playing everyone. She still knew there had to be something she was missing. He had to have something left up his sleeve.

st_arkintern: (Surprised.)

"Mjolnir, right?" Peter asks. "Our Thor used to have a hammer too, but he has this axe-hammer thing now. I don't really know what happened. What happened to your Thor's hammer?"
st_udieshard: (Default)

Re: Samirah and Peter

[personal profile] st_udieshard 2019-02-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)

"Giants stole it... He leaves it lying around from time to time and it gets stolen. The myth says only Thor can wield it, but you get five frost giants working together and they'll manage to pick it up."

Sam had never heard of an axe-hammer, but she made a mental note to ask about this when she returned home.

"Right now he's using a staff called Gríðarvölr. It isn't his favorite."

st_arkintern: (Surprised.)

Re: Samirah and Peter

[personal profile] st_arkintern 2019-02-13 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you serious? People have always said that no one could pick up Thor's hammer. You had to be worthy." Growing up, Peter always hoped he'd have the chance to try, but now it didn't sound like that was going to be possible.

"Why is he using the staff, though?"

Re: Samirah and Peter

[personal profile] st_udieshard 2019-02-13 02:02 am (UTC)(link)

She silently wondered what the criteria would be for 'worthiness', but she didn't voice something that didn't seem respectful.

"It has some powers, but the truth is..."

Samirah looked somewhat sheepish as if she were embarrassed for Thor just from saying what she was about to say.

"He's able to still get reception on his favorite shows. But the screen is small so it's not his first choice."

st_arkintern: (Huh?)

Re: Samirah and Peter

[personal profile] st_arkintern 2019-02-13 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"What?"

Samirah had mentioned something about Thor being a TV junkie before, but this was far beyond anything Peter had even imagined. Using a staff because it could get reception?

Sam smiled in a way that said 'Yeah, I'm sorry, but it's true'.

"He's... really into TV shows. Especially the ones of Netflix."

Re: Samirah and Peter

[personal profile] st_arkintern 2019-02-13 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"I really want to know what you think of our Thor now." True, even Peter's impression of Thor was a little off-kilter from reality, but that was partly because Thor wasn't around as much as the other Avengers.

That, and it was hard to know what was true and what wasn't true online.

"Then I look forward to meeting him and letting you know."

She smiled earnestly to him.

"For now, I should probably find my room and maybe do away with my axe for a while. I don't want to come off terribly hostile on my first few days here."

st_arkintern: (I can't believe this is happening to me!)

Re: Samirah and Peter

"Yeah," Peter says with a nod. "If you need anything, feel free to message me. They told you about the journals, right?"

She had yet to go to the front desk, so her response was confused.

"Journals?"

"Yeah, they're kinda magical. You write messages in them for people and they show up in other people's journals," he says. "I think you'll get one when you check in."
