[Arrival GP] it’s summer, right?

June, Xavin decided, was a puzzling month. It still seemed like spring in some ways, but was very summer already in others. Among the ways that it was summer: less demand for hot drinks. And yes, she could do iced, but that tended to mean hauling ice to her coffee-cart territory and that got old fast.

Since it was arrival day, therefore, she was trying something new. She’d taken over part of the cafe (with a decentish view of the lobby) and set it up with blenders, fruits, and other things. Surely smoothies would be acceptable, and the cafe space meant not having to haul ice.

As a further acknowledgement of probable sun and warmth, Xavin ensured there were obvious stacks of towels near the more usual baskets of things for new arrivals. If there were any newcomers and she’d forgotten something, well... it would probably be all right eventually.

A towel draped over her head, Janet gives Jason an OK gesture.

"Perfect-o," she says. "I like the color."

"Okay," Janet responds to that, filing that information away in her OS's files for future reference. It was rather unusual, having to fill in the mental gaps. It was weird having mental gaps at all. "Sounds fun!"

“Sure.” Fun, right. Quiet, mostly, at least. “How do you teleport? I’ve never met anyone else who can do it without a briefcase.” Knowing who he was wasn’t as impressive. He was infamous, after all.

"Do you think it's pink enough?" It was probably the pinkest it was ever going to get, really. "You want to try one? You could have a girl cape!"

Jason seemed unphased. "Okay, then a Janet cape!" He held it out to her and wiggled the fabric like of like she was a bull and he a matador.

This pleases Janet, and her already pretty large smile seems brighter than before.

"A Janet cape!" she says, clapping her hands together.

Janet promptly takes the towel from him and drapes it over her shoulders then ties it at the neck, not entirely unlike Jason -- though she manages to make it look much neater.

"There!"

“So you’re an... android of some kind?” Super advanced, but not impossibly so, at least to the mind of someone who called an android Mom. “What are your other base functionalities?”

“Seriously? What job function needs that much power?” Five tilted his head, then shrugged. “Never mind. Doesn’t matter, you’re stuck here like the rest of us. But if you’ve got all the knowledge in the universe... did killing the butcher work? I kind of blew up the Commission before finding out.” The math had been so perfect. Kill the butcher so his disgusting filthy son took over the shop, thus providing tainted meat, thus rendering the Hindenburg pilot too sick to fly, thus delaying the flight until it would have to go through an electrical storm and BOOM. History preserved. But math was for shit if some bonehead couldn’t figure out ‘pull trigger’.

He clapped. "You look so dope! We could be like, two superhero people who fight crime and stuff." He proceeded to pretend to do some karate moves a child might re-enact from a movie. He jumped up on the bed and did a few more 'moves'.

"There are superheroes here," Janet informs him, standing upright. "You could technically learn to fight crime from them."

Provided there was actually any crime to fight.

"My name's Toby. Technically, I'm a Duke so Duke Toby if you fancy." He smiled showing every bit of his braces. It was more of a Puckish grin but he tried.

And sure he was only a Duke because his best friend Jim was Spring Fling King but Toby could work with that!

"Thanks and let me know how that works out for you." Clarice chuckled when he talked to the sky, "and yeah I hate to break it to you but you're in another stuck place but on the bright side there are doors that open to other places." Because she couldn't help it, in her best Rod Serling voice added, "you unlock the door with a key of imagination."

A beat. "Sorry, I couldn't resist. So you've been in another place like this? That bites."

"Not bad exactly." Buffy assured him, "but we're stuck here. This is the Madonna Inn and people get pulled here from every where and every when." To stop the next question before it formed she quickly added, "I have no idea who's doing it or why or even how to get out of here." Buffy paused for a minute as she thought, "and really it's not that bad for a prison or experiment or whatever this is."

"Wait, hold up. For real?" He looked at her, still on the bed. "Like, real superheroes?"

Jason paused as a realization seemed to form over him.

"Does that mean.. we're at this hotel to like, become ones ourselves? Like that school in the X-Men?!"

"I didn't actually think anyone would listen. They rarely do." Though his dad had come through a few times. Lately, though, he had been pretty silent. Though he focused on her actual question. "yeah. It was an island and less 'hotel apparently in the middle of a desert'. Found my way off it twice, so, maybe I'll be able to figure out a way here. I wish I had Festus." He paused as he looked at the woman. "You didn't see a giant bronze flying dragon did you?"

"Before I was here I was in this place that had lots of yogurt and nice people." He frowned, pondering. "Or were they bad people? Or good people pretending to be bad people. Or bad people pretending to be good people? Or good people pretending to be bad people pretending to be good people."

Jason went silent and it was probably clear by his face he was trying to suss out the answer like he was doing some very hard math equation.

"Duke of Arcadia." Well he was the only Duke in his hometown of Arcadia. So that totally counted!

"I was a King once! But I stepped down because what the Quagawumps really needed was a Queen." That was true, but he was only a King for like an hour until they figured out he wasn't their reincarnated long lost King that he coincidentally looked like.

He was still really good friends with Queen Wumpa. She and the Quagawumps even helped him defeat Morgana.

Despite her best intentions, Clarice actually looked up in the sky to see if there was a dragon. That just told you how weird her life was. It wouldn't have surprised her to see one.

"I did see a small tan flying animal but not a giant bronze flying dragon." Okay it might have been a flying squirrel gliding between trees, but Clarice wasn't about to admit to that. "Your dragon's name is Festus?"

Buffy idly wondered if her face looked like that when she was working out a problem. It probably did. Or it was blank because like when Giles explained something that she didn't really care about.

"You have those, too? Well I don't know about the last one but bad people pretending to be good or good people pretending to be bad, definitely." Well some vampires and big bads like the Mayor.

"No, absolutely not," Janet says. She has no idea why they are here, but she's positive it's not for that. "We are both who we are and there's no changing that."

At least not here, anyway. There were plenty of ways to give yourself powers in the Good Place, but this was definitely not the Good Place. Or the Bad Place, either. It wasn't even a Neutral Place.
