[GP] Réveillon & New Year's Eve & Check-In
Emma had said, during Winter's Crest, that she missed a tradition from home called réveillon. She seemed also to miss her cousin, as Lillith missed hers. Since she wished both to learn to cook and to be of comfort to her friend, it had been decided they would make a réveillon dinner for New Year's Eve.
Yet when Emma began to lay out the courses -- oyster soup and potato & leek soup, salad, a gumbo, venison roast, cheeses, and creme brulee, plus several hors d'ouevres not yet decided -- Lillith quailed at the size of the undertaking. Surely she would wish someone to assist who could contribute more than roasted rabbit, wheat or potato flour dumplings, and koláč.
Since Sunny likewise missed her family and would certainly wish a distraction, when she entered the cafe where they were planning, the other two seized upon her almost at once. Sunny could hardly resist their dual entreaty, even had she wished to, and Lillith thought she seemed even more ready for company than previously. Of course Sunny had offerings of her own: jolloff rice, peppered chicken, and fried plantain.
Between they three, the planning and the cooking were very nearly merry, and Lillith kept them liberally supplied with champagne (her personal favorite), too. By late afternoon of the eve of the new year, they had begun lining tables with dishes, and enlisted the help of other friends to make the evening event widely known.
Of course, in addition to the réveillon feast that took over the steakhouse, alcohol flowed freely, lights sparkled brightly, the nightclub had music for dancing. And at some point the Inn or Caroline or Regina hung mistletoe from several of the primary entrances and exits so that unless one wished to or was unaware of the tradition, no one (not even any new arrivals) need greet the new year unkissed.

Re: OTA
"You asked." He pointed out.
Re: OTA
There was no way she could let herself dwell on the fact that someone here actually thought she was hot. "So...Did you have a good Christmas or Yule or something else?"
Re: OTA
"How about you?"
Re: OTA
She smiled over at him, "So, all in all? It was a good day."

Re: OTA
"Most animals have a natural instinct to hide when they are injured. To protect the pack, and themselves." He sipped his drink thoughtfully. "Lick their wounds so to speak. It's no different for man, or some men."
He was as much animal as man, and a pack animal at that. He looked at her then, for the first time since he'd started talking.
"When I ran, the first time," Because he'd done it more than once now. "I'd lost something that I thought I was prepared to give up. But it left a hole. And I needed to be alone to find a way to live with that wound. Bo couldn't help me do that. No one could. And I knew if I went back people would try to help, but there would be their pain and their questions and I couldn't do that and help myself too."
Another swallow of beer.
"It sounds selfish, but it's not like that. It's just needing.. Space to feel what you feel without anyone else."
Re: OTA
As he spoke, she listened closely taking it all in like a starving person brought to a feast. She knew that his reasons weren't the same as Scanlan's but there were pieces that rang true to their situation as well. Vox Machina would have tried to help him, probably smothered him with worry even if they meant well.
"Did you, I mean, were you alone the whole time?" She bit her lip, "My...friend. He's not really the lone wolf type. He's charming and brash, lives for applause and making people laugh. Do you think some of your reasons could still apply to him?"
Re: OTA
"But being alone doesn't always mean no one is there, sometimes it just means no one who knows you is there." Like he'd been when he'd arrived at the inn. Lost, and running away from himself only to find himself stuck with people he had to learn to care about without a heart. "No one here had any expectations, or wanted anything from me."
Well, Regina had wanted his body but that had been different.
"No one asked me for more than the little I had to give for a very long time," and when she had he'd run again. Though being trapped meant he'd had to return. "Sometimes the people who love you are well meaning but suffocating."
Re: OTA
She heard Dyson when he said it wasn't about selfishness...but that didn't mean she wasn't angry. Scanlan had been nothing but suffocating to her for years, how was it fair that he got space from her when he hadn't given it to her?
Even if Scanlan had similar needs to Dyson, that didn't excuse the cruel things he'd said before leaving.
Tears stung her eyes for just a moment, but she pushed them away. Stupid tequila. "Did, did you think about her while you were away? Did you miss her?"
Re: OTA
Polite was rarely what was needed when getting space.
"It was different for me," he didn't want to say yes or no, because he had no idea what Pike's friend would be thinking about. Or not thinking about. "In a lot of ways I thought about nothing but my pain. I was feral, angry. Like an animal."
And without his love, missing Bo hadn't exactly been feasible.
Re: OTA
Re: OTA
"It might take your friend time too."
Re: OTA
By the end, there was bitterness dripping off of each word.
Re: OTA
"Maybe you're better off without him then." He'd certainly been better off without his king. Despite everything. "Selfish people will always take what you give, but they don't return anything."
Re: OTA
Pike let out a big sigh then pulled her emotions together and found a way to smile, "Just. Well. If someone who's my height shows up and calls himself Scanlan, or Burt Reynolds, or the Meatman, just, I don't know, punch him in the face? Maybe?"
Re: OTA
Re: OTA
Re: OTA
"I'll keep that in mind. And if he turns me into a toadstool or something I expect you to turn me back."
