Emma had said, during Winter's Crest, that she missed a tradition from home called réveillon. She seemed also to miss her cousin, as Lillith missed hers. Since she wished both to learn to cook and to be of comfort to her friend, it had been decided they would make a réveillon dinner for New Year's Eve.

Yet when Emma began to lay out the courses -- oyster soup and potato & leek soup, salad, a gumbo, venison roast, cheeses, and creme brulee, plus several hors d'ouevres not yet decided -- Lillith quailed at the size of the undertaking. Surely she would wish someone to assist who could contribute more than roasted rabbit, wheat or potato flour dumplings, and koláč.

Since Sunny likewise missed her family and would certainly wish a distraction, when she entered the cafe where they were planning, the other two seized upon her almost at once. Sunny could hardly resist their dual entreaty, even had she wished to, and Lillith thought she seemed even more ready for company than previously. Of course Sunny had offerings of her own: jolloff rice, peppered chicken, and fried plantain.

Between they three, the planning and the cooking were very nearly merry, and Lillith kept them liberally supplied with champagne (her personal favorite), too. By late afternoon of the eve of the new year, they had begun lining tables with dishes, and enlisted the help of other friends to make the evening event widely known.

Of course, in addition to the réveillon feast that took over the steakhouse, alcohol flowed freely, lights sparkled brightly, the nightclub had music for dancing. And at some point the Inn or Caroline or Regina hung mistletoe from several of the primary entrances and exits so that unless one wished to or was unaware of the tradition, no one (not even any new arrivals) need greet the new year unkissed.

Much as she loved Piotr, and God knew she did, always, no matter what, his arrival at the Inn had stirred up a lot of muck she'd been repressing. (And wouldn't her therapist be proud that she knew she'd been doing it?) She'd repressed it even harder for the first few days, buried herself in making sure he settled in okay and redoubling her efforts to find some way to measure the energies around the portal to the other world, if that was what it was.

Eventually even she had to admit she didn't have the tools, which promptly plunged her into the kind of funk that only kicking the crap out of something could help. So she did what made perfect sense at the time, fetched her maybe-girlfriend and suggested an outing to "Songrun" in search of trouble or at least distraction. If they didn't find trouble, she and Lara could kick the crap out of each other recreationally.

"Feel like exploring?" she asked when she turned up at Lara's door. It was pretty obvious that the only right answer was hell yes.

Wyatt had a lot on his mind since Valentine's day and the actions of it. He'd come to realize, at least in his mind, that while he might have been under the influence of whatever had occurred, it had been very different with Kitty than with Phryne. His reactions to both women had been very different and not just because one was a virtual stranger. He'd wanted a date with Kitty and he wanted it to be special enough that she'd realize it hadn't been because of the after effects but because he really had wanted to date.

The possibilities were very limited, which was why Wyatt had taken to going horseback riding in the surrounding area. He'd been looking for a spot that wasn't the cafe or bar. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but it was the first date for both of them in a long time and Wyatt wanted it to be memorable.

It also gave him an excuse to riding a horse and getting back to his West Texas roots that he missed a lot. He hadn't realized how much until that first ride here. Wyatt even missed taking care of the stall, which was why even with there being 'guests' that take care of the stables, he was in search of fresh hay to put in the stall of the horse he'd just brought back.

Wyatt's not exactly comfortable with his "roommate" and invites Kitty to come "meet" it. Kitty offers him some mutation-related distraction.

None of the guests noticed when the spiky-haired man-child in jeans and purple t-shirt, wrists wrapped in cheap leather and metal bracelets, arrived at the Madonna Inn a few hours before midnight on February 13. That, in itself, wasn't all that surprising. Eros, otherwise known as Danny Valentine, had millennia of experience doing his job without being spotted.

What was surprising was that the dude at the front desk did see him. Tall and Nondescript waved him over and then gave him a room number 'in case you wanted to rest'. But Danny didn't.

Want to, or rest. He spent the time before the clock struck midnight polishing his love gun. Not like that. He'd find a girl to spend his nameday with. He always did. No, this little beauty was made by Hephaestus himself. It shot love darts that disappeared on contact.

At midnight, kitted out with more love darts than there were people in this pink and gold monstrosity, Danny left his room and shot the first person he saw--and didn't wait to see what would happen.

No point getting a slow start. He had a lot of work to do.

Fifteen days into this particular strange trip, Kitty had redistributed alcohol supplies between the cafe, restaurant, and night club to make it possible to easily tend bar wherever people decided to gather. Today, as most days, she settled into the lobby cafe after chivvying the cook into chicken tenders and french fries (after convincing him it was a single plate meal). It was the closest she could get to "bar food" from him and someone would probably arrive sooner rather than later to make something else.

A few people trickled in after awhile, but none of them demanding. Like her, they drank coffee from the samovar she'd put out. And also like her, most of them had something else to keep them occupied. At the moment, Kitty had a notebook open (from the gift shop; she kept her school notebooks separate in case she made it home during the term) and was sketching plans to upgrade the hotel's computer technology. She needed more raw computing power to work out the energy requirements to do what Illyana did with a thought.

She lifted her head periodically to check for new customers, and had just seated herself at the end of the bar after refilling the samovar when the first new new customer arrived. Immediately, she flipped to a fresh page in the notebook and headed it "Day 15" and made a hash mark for one new arrival. Then she looked up from her notebook and offered one and all her best bartending smile.
