[GP/EP] Pie for Pi Day

The only ones who might have known yesterday held any significance were Jag and Sunny, and if they did, they also knew her well enough to know she wasn't big on celebrations. Her one tradition, a new deck for her birthday, hadn't been possible this year, since she hadn't found anything like a tarot deck on Asphodel Station. But that was okay.

Pi Day, on the other hand, was worth celebrating. Everybody liked pie. Last week, she'd talked to Pike, who had been curious and excited about a holiday for pie, and seemed eager to help. Yesterday, she'd put a notice on the bulletin board, hand-lettered over a watercolor scene of pies and more pies. She'd also made ice cream in a variety of flavors, since she wasn't Bobby to freeze it on demand, in less time than it took to prepare the custard base. Today, she left the non-pie food preparation to Ignis, the chicken chef, and anyone who wanted to fend for themselves.

Today, along with Pike and anyone else who wanted to and knew what they were doing, Emma baked pies. Fruit pies and cream pies. Quiche and pot pies. Shepherd's pie and meat pies. Hand pies, savory or sweet, baked or fried. As close as she could get to real Brooklyn-style pizza this far from Brooklyn. Some were decorated with the symbol π or the first few digits of the number it represented, as a vent in a top crust, piped in whipped cream, or carefully laid out in caramelized onions depending on the pie. And because she couldn't resist the visual pun any more now than she could the first time she celebrated Pi Day at the castle, a square apple pie (one of Bobby's favorites) and cherry tart (a recipe she'd learned from Sabine, the fruits a deep ruby red against white cream and pale crust that would have appealed to her cousin's aesthetics).

It wasn't the same as Pi Day at the castle, but there was a bustle and energy as people moved between the kitchens, the bakery, and the cafe, sitting to talk over a slice, or helping each other choose what to taste next. As long as Emma stayed busy, she could enjoy the memories without dwelling on the people she missed.

And there was pie. Everybody likes pie.

Pike may have been busy putting out fresh pies, but she could never miss Scanlan entering a room. At first, she thought he was moving with some kind of obnoxious swagger. Maybe he was trying to impress people? But upon closer inspection, she changed her mind. He was definitely injured. Without hesitating, she made her way over and pinned him against the wall with a hand to his chest. "What did you do?"

Being pushed against a wall by Pike was definitely one of the many fantasies Scanlan had of her. He lifted up his hands in faux surrender. "I don't know, but whatever it is, it isn't my fault." Or maybe, probably, it was.

Pike watched the thoughts zip through Scanlan’s mind and promptly realized the position they were in. Being around Alec had definitely made her more physical than she’d used to be. Freeing him, she looked pointed down to his knee leg and back up again. “You did something, and it’s too bad for you to heal yourself. Why didn’t you come to me?”

Because maybe I deserve this for a little bit.

"I didn't want to bother you... I'm sure it'll get better with time." He knew his healing wasn't helping any extra, but it didn't stop him from trying.

“You should know better than that,” she poked him in the chest, her gauntlet clanking a little, “Did you get yourself poisoned? Or is something infected?”

Rather than waiting for him to answer she cast Greater Restoration. Whether or not that would fix his leg, he probably had some kind of disease that needed healing.

He wondered if Pike knew the feeling of her feeling was very Pike-specific. That every time she healed him he could feel her warmth and it wasn't the same feeling when Vex did it or Kash. Scanlan could have his eyes closed and he would know who healed him.

"Okay, okay. Just, don't get mad, alright?" Scanlan looked at Pike expectantly.

"I can't promise that," She arched an eyebrow, "But I promise if I get mad it will be because you deserve it."

He sighed a bit. "I got shot in the knee."

"Shot? Was it by an arrow or bullet? After all of these years, how do you not know to remove things before healing?" she chuckled. Taking a glance around the room, she quickly decided that there was no where for her to get a good look at what she was dealing with. "Do you think you can walk to the clinic or do I need to throw you over you over my shoulder?" "

He offered her a playful, wry expression. "I mean, I can walk, but being thrown over your shoulder sounds pretty fantastic too."

"Okay, but don't yell at me for treating you like a child, alright?" Pike gave him a tiny little glare then hoisted him across her shoulders. "Maybe knocking you against a door frame or two along the way will smack some sense into you?"

He'd be lying if he didn't admit that Pike carrying him was a little hot. He was perfectly confident in his manliness that he could be carried by a woman and not feel embarrassed about it. Well, Pike, anyways. "You'd be making more work for yourself, though."

After so many years of enduring Scanlan's advances, Pike had gotten pretty good about knowing when they were coming. But maybe that wasn't the case anymore? After pressing him to a wall and now this, she'd definitely expected some sort of lusty comment. There was definitely a part of her that had done both things just to see how he'd respond...test this 'new Scanlan' he kept talking about.

And there was definitely an even smaller part, way in the back of her mind, that missed his advances.

"Nah, you can heal a concussion or two on your own."

Despite what she said, she protected his head throughout the short trip to the clinic and eventually deposited him onto one of the tables that had been set up. "Alright, roll up your pants and show me where you were shot."

A reply to that about rolling his pants down was definitely hanging there in the air and it even manifested in his eyes for a brief moment before it was dismissed. Scanlan dutifully rolled up his pant. "It really only hurts when I walk on it." He paused. "Or bend it." Another pause. "Or straighten it."

Pike saw the comment dance across his face, and smirked. It seemed her Scanlan was still in there, after all.

“So, every time you use your knee as a knee?” As she’s expected, the skin was healed but it was still swollen and had a pinkish color. Luckily it wasn’t too bruised, so hopefully that meant it wasn’t bleeding too much inside. From just looking there was no way to tell where the object was. She’d need to feel around a bit but she didn’t want to make things worse without more information. “Have you been healing it throughout the day? You never answered me before, was it an arrow or bullet? I need to know what’s stuck in there. Also, does it hurt more on the front or back of the knee?”

He paused, the sighed. "It's a bullet." Scanlan looked at her quietly as he knew that probably answered what happened and he wasn't sure if he should say anything else. He ended up staying silent.

"Well, that certainly answers some of my questions...but not all of them." This was clearly Percy's handiwork and therefore, wasn't an accident. Had it been an arrow, it could have conceivably come from a resident learning to shoot. But no, bullets were a rare commodity that wasn't likely. "I'm going to guess it's in the front of your knee then? Percy wouldn't shoot you from behind. He'd want you to see it coming."

"Oh yeah. He made sure I saw it coming." And didn't even flinch, either, not that Percy would, really. "I think he wanted to shoot my other knee, but ended up not doing it." Thankfully.

“Probably should have,” Pike nodded. She wasn’t going to lie and say that she didn’t think he deserved it. “Did he react like that when you came back the first time?”

While she spoke she began prepping some of the things she’d need, setting up a little tray and prepping bandages.

"Shoot me in the knee? No. He wasn't happen, but he didn't shoot me and mug me." Somehow, though, this whole Pike being a healer thing for him made things feel like home for a moment.

“He mugged you? Now that seems odd. Why was he so much more angry here?”

While she spoke, Pike began gently prodding at his knee until she found the bullet. Unfortunately it appeared to be slightly lodged under the kneecap, something that probably happened during the healing process. Removing it was going to be painful, but not impossible.

"The day I fully figure out Percy is the day I can say for sure I figured out the universe." He gave a little smile. "You'd have to ask him. I'm going to avoid him for a bit."

"That's..." she paused to look up at him, and softened just a little, "That's very true."

Shaking herself from the thought, she focused on her task at hand. With deft hands, she tied a tourniquet around his thigh to slow blood flow.

"Alright, I'm going to cut off the leg right below the knee and then see if the bullet falls out," She pulled a handsaw from the counter where she'd left it while assembling things. "Ready?"

Somehow she managed to keep a straight face throughout the whole thing.

"As long as you don't judge me too much for screaming out in pain, yes, I'm ready." Scanlan did not enjoy paid like Grog seemed to and was not as stoic about it as Vax.

She looked at him with wide eyes, “Are you really going to let me chop off your leg? Just like that?”
