Clarice still didn't sleep in her room. There were trust issues and decorating taste issues, but she was spending more time at the 'compound' as she called the Inn. Since the inhibitor collar was removed, Clarice's powers had been broken. She was pretty sure it had to do with everything that had happened to her, at least she hoped so.

So far everything that she'd tried to teleport came back split in two, even after she'd visited the places. Sometimes, it wouldn't hold true and fizzle out after a couple of minutes. The frustration was growing and she knew that made it even worse. She could hear John in her ear to concentrate on something you like.

She sat in the lobby, in one of the padded chairs, with a glowing light between her hands and a bunch of tennis balls at her feet. There was a light from the ceiling above, that correlated to the one between her hands. Clarice picked up one of the balls and tossed it through the teleport only to have two halves fall at her feet.

"Warm Jelly Donut."

To say that Clarice was shocked was an understatement. "Wow, that's generous." She only hesitated a moment because it would be nice to sleep on something other than the ground. "As long as it doesn't have an animal head staring down at me, it'll be fine."

Jane made a face. "Nope, just very pink with flower wallpaper." It actually wasn't bad if you didn't pay attention to the pink paint where there wasn't wall paper.

"I do have a ghost though."

"I'm sorry? Ghost?" Clarice was confused. "The Inn is haunted?" She wasn't at the Inn long enough to hear about the other ghosts in rooms. Her buffalo room didn't have a ghost. Not that she stayed in it long enough to notice.

"Well more like an invisible roommate, not like in the movies, but every room that has more than one bed has one." Jane said with a little shrug, "you get used to it." For Jane it was normal since it was all that she experienced.

"Well okay then. That is probably the only positive I can think about my room. I don't have an invisible roommate." Or at least when she was there she didn't. "And thanks, I might take you up on your offer. No offense, but why so nice?"

"Paying it back. When I arrived I didn't have any memories. I didn't even know my name." Jane said, "My room was under the name Jane Doe and I thought that was my name until my friend Molly explained what it meant. Now it feels more me than my real name."

"Wow." Clarice was speechless. That was probably on the same par of Clarice's arrival. "How did you get your memories back?"

"When my memories started to crack through, my friend Molly opened the cracks wider. She's helped me a lot." Jane knew that she was very lucky that Molly had been the one to meet her on her arrival.

It reminded Clarice of Sonya and she tensed a bit. They had tentatively buried the hatchet before her murder but there was residual pissed off.

"How'd she open the cracks? Is she a shrink?" Given the number of people with powers at the Inn, Clarice could guess that wasn't it.

"No, Molly's a wizard. She does illusion magic and she can help repair holes in your memories." Jane had noticed Clarice tensing and wondered at it, but she didn't ask.

"She's also an empath." As a further explanation. "Which means everything that I felt while I experienced the memories, she felt." Jane paused, "it wasn't pretty for either of us."

Well that was different.

"Does she feel it all the time or just when she's in someone's head?" Or however she got to the memories. "That's gotta suck."

"It would suck." Jane agreed, "and I'm pretty sure she feels it all the time. I don't know how she does it." She shook her head, "it's hard enough dealing with your own emotions."

"I think I'll stick with being a mutant. It sucks to have more than one power." Not that hers was working now. "Hopefully, she has some kind of shield or at least a get away to cut the emotional crap out."

"Yeah she always has a shield." Jane nodded, "I think she'd probably go nuts, or maybe that would be me." She smiled with a shrug. "But she is one of the generous people I know which is how I'm paying it forward."

"Well, I guess that means I'll have to pay it forward sometime." Clarice smiled and bent down to pick up the tennis balls. "I think I've killed enough tennis balls for today.

"You did a good job on that." Jane smiled, "come on, I'll help you pick up and you can take a look at my room if you want to see if you want to get some rest without a buffalo looking at you."
