[GP] Food for the soul

Carlos hated being back at the hotel. He had begun by trying to access the Nevernever but that had totally failed, then caught up with Buffy to go and visit both London and Edinburgh, for varying reasons, and the rest of the time he had headed to Spain - he may have been well travelled, but rarely got time to be a tourist - but his time relaxing and finding out about Spain had been unceremoniously cut short when he woke up and found himself back at the hotel. For a few moments he lay there, utterly fed up, and just feeling incredibly homesick.

That only lasted a few minutes; after that he was a man on a mission.

He hunted out Caroline, and had a long chat with her. Plans were set. Time to cook up a storm. They'd missed 4th July, this could serve as a belated celebration, as well as a 'things ain't all bad here' event. Posters went up throughout the hotel, giving notice of a cook out. Everyone was encouraged to attend. What could be bad about this?

Grills were set up outside to cook up as much meat as they could hold; non-meat options were there as well for variety; salads prepared... a vast array of food to try and cheer up anyone who needed it. Carlos took his place at the grills, brandishing tools, turning the meat over just at the right point.

All that was needed now was people to attend.

"It's not as easy as it looks." Jane put her at ease, but belied that by tossing fairly accurately toward the other ball. "To be fair, I've played it a few times so I had practice.'

Molly laughed, "you can say it, I suck at it. At least at first." She tossed another ball, this time, not as hard and it rolled closer to the white ball but it didn't knock Jane's out of the way.

"Okay, mildly suck." She teased Molly and flicked the ball to knock hers out of the way so there was only hers. It didn't work. In fact it nudged it closer.

"What did you do in the OtherEurope?"

"Spent most of my time around the Mediterranean. I could seriously live there." Molly said with a chuckle. "That was after I finally wrapped my head around that it wasn't the Europe I knew. Besides learning about old man sports," Molly teased her, "what else did you do?"

She tossed the ball and only out of sheer luck nudged one of Jane's out of the way.

"I spent most of my time skiing in Switzerland but I learned that I'm a city girl. I really liked my time in Geneva." Jane said. "Dean and I spent some time in Milan, too."

"Yeah, I'm a city girl, too. I like the pace and energy of the city. I miss Chicago a lot." Molly didn't mind the Inn and its slower pace, but she did miss the activities of the city.

"I think it's the variety of things to do and you're right, the energy of it." Jane sipped at her beer. "It will take getting used to the Inn again." She chuckled, "and that's not something I thought I'd say. I never thought I'd have to get 'used' to something."

"It's nice to have something that you can get used to."

Molly looked at her, wondering something. "Did any memories come out? I mean I know it wasn't our reality but did anything trip a memory for you?"

Jane shook her head. "Not really. I had flashes of being in woods with people I don't know when I was in a forest. But I think it was because of being in trees rather than being in trees in Switzerland."

"I'm sorry." Molly said sincerely. "I know you hoped something would jog, but at least you know you were in a forest before and it could have been Switzerland or Germany. You were in the military, right? So maybe Germany, the Black Forest? I know there are military bases in Germany."

"Could be. I was firing a gun and ...." Jane trailed off for a brief moment and then continued. "I was intimate with him. It felt real, but it also felt like a dream."

"Woah, wait. You had sex in the woods or this was a different memory tied to the guy you saw with you firing a gun?" Molly was surprised by that. It wasn't Jane having sex in the woods, that would be normal in Molly's mind, but that this was the first time Jane had an intimate memory connected to someone.

"No!" Jane shook her head swiftly, "two different memories, but the same man. It wasn't Kurt because I haven't memories of him." She looked down at her now ringless finger. "I had an engagement ring on but I gave it back to him in my memories."

"Get out! You were engaged." Molly couldn't help the surprised outburst. "Emphasis on the were by the way. You gave back the ring in your memory so don't feel guilty about anything you've felt since waking up." She knew that was easier said than done.

A sudden thought occurred to her and she looked over at Jane slyly. "Did this memory happen before or after your time with Dean in Italy?" Molly had a feeling that it was connected.

Jane felt a blush rise but she ignored it. "When I was with him, not the first night but on the second one." She knew where Molly was going with this and she was probably right.

"Then I'm gonna guess that being with Dean triggered a feeling. Maybe the last time you had sex. That is assuming that you had sex." Molly waggled her eyebrows, "you did have sex, right?"

"Yes, we did." Jane admitted. "We both assumed that I would be staying in Europe and he would be back here. No strings, just two adults so why would a memory of being engaged come up?"

"I don't think it was the feelings that brought it up but the physical action. I think since pulling on your memories, me and your laptop files, more and more will break through." At least that was Molly's theory anyway.

Jane set her bocce ball down, the game forgotten. "You're probably right. I met someone that thought he knew me. I know it can be mistaken identity like Dean and Alec." Though Dean had a good decade and a half on Alec.

"But it got me thinking. What if my memories are false? That not only did someone make my memories go away but the ones that are coming to the surface are planted ones." She looked at Molly, "can you tell if the memories are real or fake when you're in my mind?"

That was a very interesting question and Molly gave it good consideration. "I'm not sure, to be honest. I've never thought about it if planted memories would look different to me than real ones. It might be if you believe them to be real, they'll appear real to me."

Jane took that in and nodded. "If I had implanted memories, I would think they were real because I don't know they're not. Well that sucks. I guess I'm going to have to go with my gut instinct. I know that I was a soldier, that's too ingrained to be a fake memory." She paused, "but I'm not sure which soldier I am. Am I Asgardian, the woman Thor knows or am I Alice Kreuger from South Africa trained to be a soldier from a child?"

"I'd say have someone do a DNA test, but that won't help. You said in your files that it had Taylor Shaw's DNA and South African genetic traits. If they could manufacture Taylor's into your tests, they could probably do the same with Asgardian." Molly thought so anyway. "You might never know, but go with your gut instinct when you learn more from Thor."

Jane nodded, "it sometimes feels like all I have is my gut instinct but it hasn't been wrong yet. Thanks, Molly. Maybe it doesn't matter who I was but only who I am now.""

"And who you are now, is pretty damn amazing." Molly gave her friend a quick hug. "Don't worry too much on who you might have been. I have a feeling you'll get it figured out eventually. Your memories will work their way through."
