[Backdated 8/25 - mini-GP open to team demilich or by request] is anyone dead?

Coming back to consciousness hurt, significantly more than Loki remembered hurting in recent memory. There didn't seem to be a single part of his body that wasn't in some kind of pain, and on top of that he became aware, very quickly, of an odd whistling emptiness that said too much magic. He couldn't even have called one of his knives.

All of that being the case, he didn't move. If the fight was still going on, he intended to stay down. For a little while. Until he had something to act with or on. Or until he legitimately passed out again; that seemed horribly likely, with the way his head was swimming and the warm-wet of blood flowing out instead of staying in.

The desert was essentially silent, though, for the definition of 'silence' that included the sounds of wind and ordinary movement. Footsteps. Voices.

He wasn't dead, then. Was anyone else?

"Would you think less of me if I said dumb luck?" Clarice smiled slightly and pushed her hair behind her ear, which exposed the pointed tip that also said she was a mutant.

"You get better at running away when you're being hunted for being different." She said honestly with only a hint of bitter. "When your abilities just appear, you try to figure them out as best you can. Which is why it's generally dumb luck you get better at it."

"Trial by fire. I'm no stranger." He really wasn't. An extended stay in a cave surrounded by terrorists who wouldn't wait for the shrapnel cozying up in your pericardium to kill you first would give you that perspective.

"Can't chalk all that panache to sheer dumb luck. Give yourself a smidgen of credit."

"Thinking on the fly helps a lot. I've never done a portal with a magical barrier, we don't have magic where I'm from. Well we do, but it's pull a rabbit out of its hat kind." She gave him a quick grin, "I'm kick ass at improvising."

"Excellent soft skills, appreciation for liquor--if we were back home, I'd offer you a job." Tony did his best to not fully sink back and become one with the cushions. "Ask Thor. I'm a fantastic boss."

"Dude, you know how long it's been since someone -- hell, I don't think anyone has ever offered me a job." Clarice snickered. "And you're Thor's boss, huh? That should make interesting board meetings."

"Well. Teammate with a wallet. Sponsor. Sugar Daddy. Whatever you want to call the guy who pays for everything, designs everything, and makes everyone look cooler." Tony winked. A self-indulgent thought flashed through his mind of rebuilding the brand, as it were, at the hotel. "Granted, I've been in retirement, and getting my head split is probably a sign I should stop living like it."

"Sometimes it takes a knock on the head to get your head back in the game." Clarice knows that from experience. "And I don't see you in real retirement, because if you had, you wouldn't have had a new cool suit with you when you were yanked here. Unlike me that my cool talent comes with me wherever I go, you have to be using yours."

"This?" Tony gestured at the arc reactor embedded in his chest. "This is insurance. The bad guys don't stop, no matter what the status of my working life is. Life is cruel that way." He winked, despite the somber admission. Half-delirious with pain and with a stomped ego and fritzy suit, what else did Tony Stark have but a plucky attitude?

"Next time. Next time. You'll see Iron Man's best side."

Clarice had assumed he was Iron Man that Alec had talked about when she'd seen his suit. It was nice to have confirmation and she actually liked him, but she didn't have the baggage that Alec did with Peter.

"I look forward to it. Well not having a skull attack again, I'm good with that not happening, but seeing Iron Man's best side."

"Well, you sure ain't seeing it now." With a suppressed hiss, Tony pushed back to his feet. It wouldn't do to keep lingering in a chair and have someone come after him for not resigning himself to a proper bed. "Not without some much needed R&R. Clarice, right? Take it easy. Shot of whiskey makes the medicine go down, all that."

"More than a shot." Clarice agreed, "but damn straight. See ya around. Maybe we'll have a we defeated an asshole party complete with portal ping pong after we've all recovered."
