[GP] SNOW DAY

Thor and Loki got an early start, because there was a lot to do. Almost two weeks to the day since their first small-but-successful experiment with snow, Loki was confident that he'd improved enough for a bigger experiment. Still snow, because Thor wanted it and it did seem like a decent way to try something big-ish without causing Loki unnecessary grief with the other residents. (It was an arrival day, so there would perhaps be some grief with any new arrivals, but that was entirely acceptable.)

It was before dawn when they went out into the grounds. Thor called up clouds and loaded them with water so they hung low and heavy, covering the sky so that the sun, when it rose, wouldn't ruin the event. Loki took his frost giant shape and staff (now very familiar to his hand) and concentrated on dropping the temperature. Just around the Inn and grounds, but that was enough to be serious effort.

When the snow first started, the flakes were big and wet, and melted as soon as they hit the ground, which was still on the warm side. As they melted, they cooled the ground. After an hour or so, the flakes were smaller and more powdery - real snow, not glorified slush - and they were starting to stick to the ground.

By mid-morning, the Inn and grounds were covered with a thick layer of snow, and it continued to fall.

***

Meanwhile, indoors and inspired by the snow, Hurley and Xavin decided to try and make cookies. Cooking together was fun, since neither of them exactly knew what they were doing apart from 'follow the recipe', but since the point was 'try to make cookies' they ended up with a lot of cookies. Sugar cookies, gingerbread, all kinds.

There was no way they'd be able to eat all of them.

Instead, they loaded them onto trays and hauled them to the cafe, then brought out various frostings and candies for decorating. This had been completely intentional. Completely.

"You have a blowdryer?" Thor asks. He's not really sure on the amenities of the other rooms here, though he's been known to stay overnight in Loki's room and in Quill's. "We have one in our room."

Because she didn't really use the thing, Corbie really hadn't thought about it until Thor mentioned it. "Yeah, but I don't use it. I was just thinking of asking Darryl for a towel."

He did have an endless supply of them, it seemed.
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

"Sounds like a good idea." All things considered it probably wouldn't be too much of an exaggeration to say Thor was twice her size, but all the same, Corbie held out a hand to help him up.

Thor takes her hand and pulls himself up.

"You know, hair is a pretty important part of Asgardian culture," Thor says as they head back toward the room. "My hair used to be considerably longer."

While she could--maybe should--have dropped his hand, Corbie held onto it as they walked. "What happened to it?"
st_ormbreaker: (Hella charming.)

"This madman called the Grandmaster force me to fight in his Tournament of Champions," he says. "Had some guy cut it all off."

Thor was not pleased. He's still not pleased about it.

"It's going to take me forever to grow it back." He runs his hand through his hair.
st_rikingblueeyes: (Can I help?)

Felix had cut off all his beautiful hair after a few months in Corambis. He'd said it was to look more like a Corambin gentleman, but in Corbie's mind it had been more a symbol of mourning. For Melusine, for Gideon, perhaps both. "Do I wanna know how you ended up there doing that?"

"Well, before my father died, he told me that I had a half-sister who he imprisoned in Hel. She attacked me and my brother and we both landed on Sakaar. Valkyrie --" Thor looks around for her, but doesn't see her anywhere around right now. "-- found me, slapped an Obedience Disk on me and sold me to the Grandmaster for 10 million credits."

He says this all easily, as if this were just another wild adventure.

"Things all worked out, though. Valkyrie's the lieutenant of my army." Granted, it wasn't much of an army anymore. Not after Hela and certainly not after Thanos.
st_rikingblueeyes: (Yes?)

Corbie just kind of stared. "She sold you, and you made her your lieutenant?"

"Well, she helped me and Loki fight our sister," Thor says. Even before, when she refused to help, he couldn't find it in her to be angry at her. There were more important things to worry about.

Thor opens the door and holds it open for Corbie. "I trust her with my life."

"There's a long story in there, isn't there?" Corbie asked as she went inside first. She didn't necessarily expect to hear it, but weird circumstances could make allies out of the most unexpected people. Hadn't that been how she'd ended up with Felix?

"My brother usurped the throne, cast my father down to earth, stripped him of his powers and memories..." That was just the beginning of it. "...then all the stuff with my father and the Grandmaster and Valkyrie happened and we went to Asgard to stop Hela."

A grin. "Fought an entire army of undead Asgardian warriors."
st_rikingblueeyes: (Cough)

Re: Thor & Corbie

"Wow." Corbie couldn't think of a polite way around it. "Your life is fucked."

Thor lets out a laugh. "That's one way of putting it."

He leads the way to the front desk. "Jane used to tell me my life was weird by her standards but to most humans who have never left their planet, the reality of faster-than-light travel itself is unusual. That's normal for me."
st_rikingblueeyes: (Dreaming big)

Re: Thor & Corbie

[personal profile] st_rikingblueeyes 2018-12-29 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't even get what that means." Corbie said almost cheerfully, so far out of her depth with that idea that she couldn't even pretend to know what he was talking about.

She smiled up at the innkeeper when they reached the desk, even though he never smiled back or even seemed to notice. "Hey Darryl, any spare towels back there?" Which of course he did. He always did. And she disappeared under the terrycloth as she rubbed a towel over her hair.
st_ormbreaker: (Hella charming.)

Re: Thor & Corbie

Thor hums lightly as he watches Corbie dry down her hair.

"On Asgard, we have technology to be able to travel from planet to planet. They're so far apart that human technology doesn't allow them to travel further than their moon."

There was a chance that that would change someday. Thor didn't know how the Quinjet found its way onto Sakaar; perhaps a wormhole to the planet appeared before the Hulk could pass the Earth's moon -- but it was equally likely he had done so successfully.

"There are thousands of inhabited planets out there. I've visited about a few hundred. There's Nine Realms -- nine planets -- that I'm supposed to protect as part of the royal house, so most of the time, I spend my days there."

There were some definite exceptions, though. Especially recently.

Shyly, Corbie disappeared back under the towel and kept rubbing as she explained. "Rosa mundi. The world rose. A philosopher in my world believed that all the stars in the sky had the potential to bloom as our sun and our own world did."
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

Re: Thor & Corbie

[personal profile] st_ormbreaker 2018-12-29 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
A smile blossoms on Thor's face. "I think that's a wonderful way of looking at it. In my reality, we have something like it called Yggdrasil -- the World Tree."

Thor recalls explaining this all to Jane years before when they first met.

"Did you believe your philosopher before you came here?"
st_rikingblueeyes: (Learning is awesome)

Corbie set the towel down on the counter and started to comb through her curls with her fingers. "Didn't know," she admitted. "It was an interesting idea, but we didn't exactly have proof or nothing."
st_ormbreaker: (Hella charming.)

Thor watches as Corbie runs her hand through her curls and runs his hand through his own shorter locks without even thinking about it.

"But you believe them now?"
st_rikingblueeyes: (Never shuts up)

A gesture that didn't escape Corbie's attention, though for the moment she tucked it away without comment. She winced and slowed down to deal with a snarl. "Well, yeah. Can't deny the evidence right in front of me, can I?"
st_ormbreaker: (Confused.)

Re: Thor & Corbie

[personal profile] st_ormbreaker 2018-12-30 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose not," Thor says. "Some people've thought this was a delusion or some crazy fever dream for awhile, but that seems to pass eventually."

Thor glances over at her hair. "Did you need help with that?"
