Unplanned and Spontaneous Travel - Open

One of the locals in Zermatt had recommended going to Geneva as well as some of the Swiss wineries for day trips. Another suggestion had been to do some hiking and ski trails into Northern Italy from the Matterhorn, so Jane had taken them up on those suggestions.

After spending time skiing on the Matterhorn, she took one of the trails into Breuil-Cervinia, Italy and had lunch at a small restaurant with a view of the Alps and after shopping she stopped at a lovely local bar to warm up with alcohol before heading back into Switzerland.

When Jane was ready for some more nightlife than the carless town of Zermatt offered, she headed by train into Geneva. It was something that she craved, that she didn’t know that she did until she experienced it. This was a side that she learned about herself, she actually liked the energy of the large cities, with time for relaxation back at Zermatt.

"It might be worth it just to see that." Jane laughed and turned her attention out over the lake thinking of her conversation with Liz in Geneva. "I told Liz that I wasn't going back." She looked back at Dean. "I mean, like the space station, we went back on our own, but this is different. I'm staying here if the door closes without me. I've heard that the Inn yanks you back, but that could just be 'legend'."

Dean was tempted, he had a car and an open road, but the Inn had Sam and his mom, there was no way he'd leave that behind.

"There's a lot that this place has." He agreed, "but Sam and mom are at the Inn." He thought about it for a minute, "if you do stay and it doesn't yank you back, buy a classic car. They're a hell of a lot better than the modern ones and I freely admit I'm biased."

Jane relaxed at his answer and smiled, "yeah? what kind of car do you suggest? I thought you'd tell me to keep the bike."

"Oh you should definitely keep the bike. Hot chick on a bike." Dean winked and made a happy sound. "But for classic you can't go wrong with a De Tomaso Pantera." The fact that it looked a bit like his baby might be why he liked the Italian car.

"I have absolutely no idea what kind of car that is, but I'll look it up if I stay." Jane didn't really care about cars, but she didn't tell Dean that. "I might just travel through Europe with the rail pass until I figure out where I want to land."

"Or just keep traveling." Dean said and popped another ravioli in his mouth. "That's what Sam and I do. Being at the inn is the longest I've stayed in one place since my dad became a Hunter."

"What's it like traveling all the time? I mean I get that's what you're used to, but now that you've been in one spot longer than normal, do you still like it?" She was curious.

"Yeah, I do. I like the freedom." He had a thoughtful expression for a couple of beats before he added, "but I think it's the cases more than anything. Helping people. I miss that a lot here. Would I give it up to have this time with my mom? Hell yes. But I do miss it."

Jane wished she had a connection like he did to his family. Molly was really family for her. She was the first person she'd met when waking up and the only constant in the life that she knew. Yet, she would give that up to stay in the otherworld.

"I have a flash of a memory of an adult male reaching for my hand when I was little and walking downstairs. I think it's my father but I don't know that. I don't really know who my parents were only what it said in the files on the laptop."

He at least had his father and Bobby growing up. "What did the files say?" They hadn't really talked about it much. Dean didn't share much and Jane didn't have much to share.

"My parents were against Apartheid in South Africa and were killed because of it. My brother and I were taken to a place that wanted to make child soldiers." She ran a hand through her hair, "but I don't know if they really were killed because of their political beliefs or to get to my brother and I. Orphaned kids make the best soldiers."

"Damn, you should talk to Alec again." He knew that they'd met and talked. "The government tried to make him a kid soldier, too. He might be able to help you walk through that." A beat, "if you get yanked back."

That surprised Jane, but she nodded. "I will, thanks. Alex helped me a lot when I found out I was Special Forces. Maybe Alec will, too." She paused when Lorenzo brought their main meal, then thanked him.

Jane turned her attention back to Dean, "I thought you were a soldier when we first met." She confessed. "You had that look in your eyes, the same one I saw in Alec, and myself in the mirror. Molly has it, too but hers is more haunted."

"I was sort of. My dad was a former Marine and when he trained us to be Hunters, he fell back on what he knew. Military training. I was a good soldier, I didn't question anything and Sam - Sam questioned everything when he got older." Dean explained, then added. "But after Dad died, I wasn't that soldier anymore, but sometimes I do fall back on it. It kept me alive more times than I can count."

Jane was silent for a moment then said, "I think I fall back on my training, too. I don't even think about it anymore and just let my instincts take over when I'm sparring."

"Gut instinct will save you every time." Dean believed that firmly. He paused, not having told anyone but his family about his time in Purgatory. "Before I came to the Inn, I was in Purgatory. Literally. Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, that one. Leviathans, which are ancient demons I guess you could call them that. Anyway they're God's fuck ups so he locked them in Purgatory. Vampires are there, too. Anything God considers monsters."

He watched her as he told his story, "I killed their leader and accidentally got sucked in when he died. I spent months in a kill or be killed world and the only thing that kept me alive was my friend Benny and my gut instinct."

Jane sensed the seriousness of what she was hearing, even if it wasn't something she could truly comprehend. "Did Benny get sucked in with you, too?" She assumed he had.

"No, he was already there. Benny was a vampire, but he saved my life more than once. He wanted a ride out with a human that wasn't supposed to be there and I needed help getting out. We made a deal and I found another brother." Which was how Dean thought of him and that wasn't anything that Dean thought he'd feel for a vampire.

Jane looked him with confusion, "how did you get out of Purgatory? In a car?" She'd assumed her meant that kind of ride, but couldn't imagine there were cars in a place for monsters.

Dean gave a surprised laugh and shook his head, "damn, I wish I did have my car in Purgatory, but no when I say ride, I meant me. There was a way for his essence to ride in my veins. When I got out, I released the essence over his bones and he just reappeared."

"You mean fully formed like he'd never been dead?" Jane asked incredulously. "I'm not sure I'd be able to wrap my head around that."

"Fully formed." Dean nodded, "and it was weird to see. I didn't see him knit together or anything. Just saw his bones, then he was standing behind me. It wasn't so bad, because he looked like he did in Purgatory."

Jane actually hadn't thought of that, but she guess she assumed when you died your spirit, essence, soul, whatever you wanted to call it would look like you.

"He must have shocked his friends and family, returning to life."

"Not really." He explained, "Benny had been dead for a long time that most of his family wasn't around anymore." Dean didn't mention the falling out with his vampire family, that wasn't his story to tell.

"It was hard on him coming back, it wasn't what he was expecting." Then he thought of Sam and how he hadn't tried to get Dean out of Purgatory or even look for him. "But then coming back from the dead is always hard." His lips quirked, "no matter how many times you do it."

Jane was taken aback by his answer. "No matter how many times you do it? How many times have you died and come back?"
