[GP] Food for the soul

Carlos hated being back at the hotel. He had begun by trying to access the Nevernever but that had totally failed, then caught up with Buffy to go and visit both London and Edinburgh, for varying reasons, and the rest of the time he had headed to Spain - he may have been well travelled, but rarely got time to be a tourist - but his time relaxing and finding out about Spain had been unceremoniously cut short when he woke up and found himself back at the hotel. For a few moments he lay there, utterly fed up, and just feeling incredibly homesick.

That only lasted a few minutes; after that he was a man on a mission.

He hunted out Caroline, and had a long chat with her. Plans were set. Time to cook up a storm. They'd missed 4th July, this could serve as a belated celebration, as well as a 'things ain't all bad here' event. Posters went up throughout the hotel, giving notice of a cook out. Everyone was encouraged to attend. What could be bad about this?

Grills were set up outside to cook up as much meat as they could hold; non-meat options were there as well for variety; salads prepared... a vast array of food to try and cheer up anyone who needed it. Carlos took his place at the grills, brandishing tools, turning the meat over just at the right point.

All that was needed now was people to attend.

"Sort of." Molly nodded, "but it's more internal than Carlos or Harry's magic. Like my illusion magic or mind magic. That's internal, too." She looked at her rings and wiggled her fingers at Buffy. "This stores kinetic energy and sometimes I draw on that."

"Okay, I'm going to sound really stupid but what'd kinetic energy? I kind of remember it from science, but not really." She assumed it had to do with metal since Molly's rings were made of it.

"Don't feel bad, I had to ask about it, too. It's when we move, it's that energy. You know when you feel tired and you say you need an energy boost? You really do need an energy boost. It stores in my metal rings, but any metal that you wear will work, too." Molly explained how it worked, at least for her.

"Huh, so do you like feel it? Like the buzzing so you know it's there or when you go to do a spell and it doesn't do what you think it should?" Buffy was thinking of the battles with vamps and when a split second could be between life and death - literally.

"It's not a buzzing, but I can tell if I have enough." Molly nodded, "it's hard to explain, you just know. Plus we use ley lines. In our world there's a lot of power that we can boost our magic. I don't feel it here, but I could in the Otherworlds. I just couldn't tie it to my magic." Which irritated the crap out of her.

"Huh that's not fair. Not that life is fair." Buffy had learned that lesson a long time ago. "But I guess if it's a world without magic then ley line would just be like the magnetic pole lines or whatever they are."

Molly's mind worked through her thoughts on it. "I'm actually not sure if I just couldn't access it while we were in the otherworlds but it still built up in my rings or that it wasn't there at all. I never have tried to use magic in a non-magical place right when I got back to the Inn. That's a good point. Maybe I'll try it next time."

"I'm glad I could help, sort of." Buffy laughed, "but I can see how this would be useful in battles with vampires. Can you make it a lot brighter like they would go poof with the sun?"

"Well not that bright," Molly admitted. "But, I can make it brighter and distract the hell out of them while Harry blasts them." She went on to explain, "my magic is mostly defensive."

"So's my friend, Willow's. I mean don't get me wrong, I've seen her stake a vampire with a floating pencil, but she doesn't attack with her magic." Buffy said proudly.

Molly blinked in surprise. "Okay, that's different. I never would have thought of a pencil but it is made out of wood." She was actually pretty impressed with that.

"I know, right? She's amazing." Buffy leaned in and added, "but I'm biased and she can't do this cool light show like you can."

Molly liked Buffy, they were alike in some ways and so very different in others. "How did you meet your friend? Was she doing magic?"

"Nope, Willow didn't know anything about magic until we met." Buffy shook her head with the fond memory. "I asked her to help me study. She's really smart, and I'm - not. We became friends and I tried to keep both her and Xander, that's my other friend, away from my Slaying but vampires kidnapped their friend and turned him." She shrugged, but the weight was still on her that she couldn't save their friend. "Once you see what's out there you can't not see it anymore."

"No, you can't." Molly agreed. "I wouldn't give up what I am for anything, but sometimes I don't miss what's going on in Chicago while I'm here." She made a face, "not that I expect it to go on without me. I'm pretty sure if I do go back, time stood still or I get all kinds of memories when I return what other me did."

Buffy's expression mirrored Molly's. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm doing the same thing. I sometimes miss Slaying, but I think it's more that I miss feeling useful than actually Slaying."

"I think that's why every once in a while the otherworld pops up. So we don't get too bored." Molly said with a smile over at Buffy.

"Yeah, I can see that. At least they haven't been dangerous. Uh, more than a normal world is dangerous I mean." Buffy chuckled, "says the girl from a town that has a literal mouth to hell."

Molly laughed, "well the girl from Chicago with warring vampires, wizards and other signers of the Unseelie Accords agrees with you."

Since it was also part of Carlos' world, Buffy was curious. "What are the Unseelie Accords?"

"Um, think of them like a UN agreement but instead of countries getting together to agree to rules it's the supernatural community. There's a code of conduct, but it only has to do with the supernatural. Like it won't stop vampires from feeding but if a vampire kills a wizard the wizard's family has the right to challenge them to a single combat - like pistols at dawn but not that." Molly tried to explain, "but to be honest it's a lot of blah, blah, blah, boring, blah."

"Sounds like it." Buffy admitted, though it was kind of neat that there were Supernatural rules. "We don't have rules." A beat, "well I don't think we do, I don't really pay attention to the Watcher's Council and they probably have a rule book."

"Ugh, don't get me started on the Wizard's Council. Carlos works for them as their Warden but his stick has been permanently removed from his ass. He's one of the good guys." Harry still trusted him and he had opportunity to take her in, but he hadn't. That spoke volumes to her.

"But there are laws of magic, which fine, but they don't tell you about them until it's too late."

"What is it with people that are on a Council? There was this test that they do with Slayers, and they don't tell you about it until it's happening and they drug you!" Buffy scowled, "I got through it obviously, but Giles and I had a really rough time after that."

But to be fair, Buffy had kept Angel's reappearance from him and that had caused friction, too.

"Holy crap, even ours isn't that bad. Well I guess kind of without telling you the rules and putting you to death but damn. What kind of test was it?" Molly asked.
