[GP] SNOW DAY

Thor and Loki got an early start, because there was a lot to do. Almost two weeks to the day since their first small-but-successful experiment with snow, Loki was confident that he'd improved enough for a bigger experiment. Still snow, because Thor wanted it and it did seem like a decent way to try something big-ish without causing Loki unnecessary grief with the other residents. (It was an arrival day, so there would perhaps be some grief with any new arrivals, but that was entirely acceptable.)

It was before dawn when they went out into the grounds. Thor called up clouds and loaded them with water so they hung low and heavy, covering the sky so that the sun, when it rose, wouldn't ruin the event. Loki took his frost giant shape and staff (now very familiar to his hand) and concentrated on dropping the temperature. Just around the Inn and grounds, but that was enough to be serious effort.

When the snow first started, the flakes were big and wet, and melted as soon as they hit the ground, which was still on the warm side. As they melted, they cooled the ground. After an hour or so, the flakes were smaller and more powdery - real snow, not glorified slush - and they were starting to stick to the ground.

By mid-morning, the Inn and grounds were covered with a thick layer of snow, and it continued to fall.

***

Meanwhile, indoors and inspired by the snow, Hurley and Xavin decided to try and make cookies. Cooking together was fun, since neither of them exactly knew what they were doing apart from 'follow the recipe', but since the point was 'try to make cookies' they ended up with a lot of cookies. Sugar cookies, gingerbread, all kinds.

There was no way they'd be able to eat all of them.

Instead, they loaded them onto trays and hauled them to the cafe, then brought out various frostings and candies for decorating. This had been completely intentional. Completely.

A glance behind her told Corbie there was no way she was making it to the nearest tree in time and she was completely screwed. She immediately ducked into the smallest ball she could manage, though the snowball still got her hair on the way down, leaving it both mussed and wet. She didn't stay helplessly on the ground, though, scooping up (considerably less) snow as she rose and hurling it right back.

"Ah!" Corbie strikes true, the ball of snow striking the scarred side of his face.

Thor swoops down and gathers as much snow as he can in a single arm, starts running, his free hand forming snowballs as quickly as he can. He can hardly hold an armful of snow and multiple snowballs at once, so the snowballs are thrown almost as soon as they're formed.

Corbie squeaked and her hands flew to her mouth as her eyes went huge. It was half surprise and half apology, when her aim was so true as she really hadn't meant to do that--but there was no time. The onslaught of snow was coming and one ball hit her, two, before she ducked back down into her tiny ball of defense.

In desperation she threw her hands out casting a shield. And when she realized she wasn't getting pelted with any more snow, she stared in amazement. Then she whooped and started to laugh.

Try as he might, his snowballs can not penetrate the might of Corbie's shield. If he could fly of his own volition, he would attempt an airborne assault, but he could hardly do that without summoning Stormbreaker and the last thing he wanted was for it to break through the outer wall of the inn so it could meet his hand.

Instead, he tries to form a shield of his own. Not magical, of course; he dives behind a snowbank and furiously starts pushing snow up to raise it even higher. It's necessary, because even crouched down behind it, Thor's forehead is visible from behind its peak, an all-too-easily accessible target.

Corbie wasn't remotely good enough to play defense and offense at the same time, and she had to drop the shield in order to take advantage of this opening, which she did. She tossed a snowball, yes, but really not knowing if she could hit him from this distance she did her best to rush in and rub snow in his hair.

Hey, her head was wet, she was spreading this joy.
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

Thor threw one snowball and then another from behind the snowbank; one managed to hit her calf; the other landed at her feet. It isn't enough to deter her. She races in and musses his hair with cold, wet snow and Thor lets out a burst of laughter, then falls back into the snow.

"A well-fought battle."

Even pelted with snow as she was with her damp hair, Corbie laughed brightly, bouncing up and down like a child. "Victory!"

st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

Thor smiles.

"You enjoying the snow?" he asks. "Loki and I conjured it up."

"Very much," Corbie agreed, her eyes shining with excitement and joy. "I didn't think we'd ever get to do something like this again."
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

"You did something like this before?" Thor asks, grinning back. Thor had already been in a good mood before the snowball assault upon his person, but Corbie's cheeriness was contagious.
st_rikingblueeyes: (Playful)

Corbie nodded, making her curls bounce. "Pike made snow for us last year. Ran around in it 'til I was almost frozen solid."
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

Re: Thor & Corbie

[personal profile] st_ormbreaker 2018-12-23 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thor didn't have much time to become acquainted with her before she left, but he remembered Pike as being one of the smallest ones.

"Did you have snow where you came from?" he asks. "We had it on Asgard on occasion, but not as much as some of the other realms, like Jotunheim."
st_rikingblueeyes: (Dreaming big)

Re: Thor & Corbie

[personal profile] st_rikingblueeyes 2018-12-23 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Corbie waggled a hand as if to say 'sort of.' "Bernatha is practically in the harbor, so winter was mostly a lot of cold rain, and maybe some slush. Actual snow didn't happen much."
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

"It's nice when it happens," Thor says with a smile. "It seemed to be pretty special for some humans around Christmas. Jane used to check the weather online constantly around Christmas, just to see if anything had changed with the forecast. She always wanted snow on Christmas."
st_rikingblueeyes: (Never shuts up)

"Snow's a lot more fun than rain," Corbie agreed. Though she shivered and admitted, "Maybe should dry my hair, though." Now that she'd slowed down again, she was feeling the cold.
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

"You have a blowdryer?" Thor asks. He's not really sure on the amenities of the other rooms here, though he's been known to stay overnight in Loki's room and in Quill's. "We have one in our room."
st_rikingblueeyes: (Can I help?)

Re: Thor & Corbie

[personal profile] st_rikingblueeyes 2018-12-24 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she didn't really use the thing, Corbie really hadn't thought about it until Thor mentioned it. "Yeah, but I don't use it. I was just thinking of asking Darryl for a towel."

He did have an endless supply of them, it seemed.
st_ormbreaker: (I'm quite happy thank you.)

"Sounds like a good idea." All things considered it probably wouldn't be too much of an exaggeration to say Thor was twice her size, but all the same, Corbie held out a hand to help him up.
st_ormbreaker: (Because that's what heroes do.)

Thor takes her hand and pulls himself up.

"You know, hair is a pretty important part of Asgardian culture," Thor says as they head back toward the room. "My hair used to be considerably longer."

While she could--maybe should--have dropped his hand, Corbie held onto it as they walked. "What happened to it?"

"This madman called the Grandmaster force me to fight in his Tournament of Champions," he says. "Had some guy cut it all off."

Thor was not pleased. He's still not pleased about it.

"It's going to take me forever to grow it back." He runs his hand through his hair.
st_rikingblueeyes: (Can I help?)

Felix had cut off all his beautiful hair after a few months in Corambis. He'd said it was to look more like a Corambin gentleman, but in Corbie's mind it had been more a symbol of mourning. For Melusine, for Gideon, perhaps both. "Do I wanna know how you ended up there doing that?"

"Well, before my father died, he told me that I had a half-sister who he imprisoned in Hel. She attacked me and my brother and we both landed on Sakaar. Valkyrie --" Thor looks around for her, but doesn't see her anywhere around right now. "-- found me, slapped an Obedience Disk on me and sold me to the Grandmaster for 10 million credits."

He says this all easily, as if this were just another wild adventure.

"Things all worked out, though. Valkyrie's the lieutenant of my army." Granted, it wasn't much of an army anymore. Not after Hela and certainly not after Thanos.
st_rikingblueeyes: (Yes?)

Corbie just kind of stared. "She sold you, and you made her your lieutenant?"
